88 turbo swap: Shaving the molding away

So I never have liked the molding on the side of the car, I ripped it off today and started to fill it with dura glass and going to use fiber glass with top coat for the final finish. I think the molding is a eye swore and I think it will look good and clean when done. Still have a little bit of sanding left and then glass and top coat it, probably will be done tomorrow

S4 has the good trim! Can I have your old trim if it's in good condition? Lol

Derekcat 05-29-12 10:40 PM

I've seen this done before... The car looks very strange without it.. I don't think it works. But if you like the result, that's what matters :)

K-Tune 05-29-12 10:45 PM

Car is going to look strange, especially if the door isn't perfectly smooth.

powerhour 05-29-12 10:45 PM

Personally I dont like it haha I hope I don't hate it when its done:p worst come to worst I just put a stripe painted on across the car to break it up. (I'm painted it white) and my molding is in great shape!

powerhour 05-29-12 10:46 PM

Does anyone have a pic of one done? I can't find one anywhere

GregW 05-30-12 01:15 AM

Im glad you like it, Ill be doing this mod right after I paint a huge penis on my hood.
Its your car, do as you wish, but man that is a lot of bondo.

powerhour 05-30-12 01:38 AM

Have fun with that penis lol, dura glass is not bondo it's made with fiberglass and resin per mixed in it and use a activater to make it hard, it's like bondo but it's not

magus2222 05-30-12 02:29 AM

give it a month, with some nice humidity, or even better is when it gets chilly :D
hope you prepped the paint to accept the resin......

My car has the moldings shaved... Lemme see if i can find a pic

fc3sfreek 05-30-12 02:56 AM

Surprisingly this is the only.pic i have of it... I think it looks much more modernized without the moldings http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/...Florida_US.jpg

That looks really good. Temping to do it.

You should've welded a filler strip in, then used bondo to finish it. Either way, I don't care for the look.

Rob XX 7 05-30-12 06:06 AM

Looks like it was a nice car.

+1

huge mistake.

clokker 05-30-12 06:19 AM

I think the body looks bulbous without the trim lines breaking up the expanse and it looks weird that the bumper caps suddenly sprout trim lines that don't match anything.

fc3sfreek 05-30-12 10:44 AM

What trim lines on the bumper? Lol if u look closly my back bumper has them but i molded it so the molding kinna fade in instead of just randonly show up http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/...03d95508f1.jpg

Well, since the only pic you posted showed a rear view, I guess I was referring to the rear bumper.
Which has trim lines.
That don't go anywhere.

fc3sfreek 05-30-12 10:59 AM

Thats because the back bumber looks awful without the moldings... But hey we all have our own cars we can all do what we think looks good

True, dat.

powerhour 05-30-12 11:05 AM

I think your car looks awesome man, and this isn't my first first time doing body work, I should of welded it but my welder is broken, and I have used this stuff before and it works really good, I spent a lot of time on the prep.

sharingan 19 05-30-12 11:23 AM

Some plans fail in the execution, others in the planning.....this would be a case of the latter.

you have no photos of the prep, what did you do to prep it?
the issue will be expansion and contraction, out in the sun will be the worse place for your car to be, it will be a battle against time for your bodywork not to crack along the edge.

I refused to do this for someone years ago based on this reason, he had someone else do it and just 2 years later all the moldings had already started to crack and come back.

the darker the paint, the more time out in the sun- the worst this will be.
good luck with your project, to each their own but im sorry man but in most people's eyes the car has been ruined.

fc3sfreek 05-30-12 11:54 AM

Mines been out in the sun for a little over a year. Still looks the way it did when i first got it done
