88 turbo swap: Shaving the molding away
So I never have liked the molding on the side of the car, I ripped it off today and started to fill it with dura glass and going to use fiber glass with top coat for the final finish. I think the molding is a eye swore and I think it will look good and clean when done. Still have a little bit of sanding left and then glass and top coat it, probably will be done tomorrow

S4 has the good trim! Can I have your old trim if it's in good condition? Lol
|
I've seen this done before... The car looks very strange without it.. I don't think it works. But if you like the result, that's what matters :)
|
Car is going to look strange, especially if the door isn't perfectly smooth.
|
Personally I dont like it haha I hope I don't hate it when its done:p worst come to worst I just put a stripe painted on across the car to break it up. (I'm painted it white) and my molding is in great shape!
|
Does anyone have a pic of one done? I can't find one anywhere
|
Im glad you like it, Ill be doing this mod right after I paint a huge penis on my hood.
Its your car, do as you wish, but man that is a lot of bondo. |
Have fun with that penis lol, dura glass is not bondo it's made with fiberglass and resin per mixed in it and use a activater to make it hard, it's like bondo but it's not
|
give it a month, with some nice humidity, or even better is when it gets chilly :D
hope you prepped the paint to accept the resin...... Lloyd |
My car has the moldings shaved... Lemme see if i can find a pic
|
Surprisingly this is the only.pic i have of it... I think it looks much more modernized without the moldings http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/...Florida_US.jpg

You should've welded a filler strip in, then used bondo to finish it. Either way, I don't care for the look.
|
Looks like it was a nice car.

huge mistake. |
I think the body looks bulbous without the trim lines breaking up the expanse and it looks weird that the bumper caps suddenly sprout trim lines that don't match anything.
|
What trim lines on the bumper? Lol if u look closly my back bumper has them but i molded it so the molding kinna fade in instead of just randonly show up http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/...03d95508f1.jpg

Which has trim lines. That don't go anywhere. |
Thats because the back bumber looks awful without the moldings... But hey we all have our own cars we can all do what we think looks good

I think your car looks awesome man, and this isn't my first first time doing body work, I should of welded it but my welder is broken, and I have used this stuff before and it works really good, I spent a lot of time on the prep.
|
Some plans fail in the execution, others in the planning.....this would be a case of the latter.

the issue will be expansion and contraction, out in the sun will be the worse place for your car to be, it will be a battle against time for your bodywork not to crack along the edge. I refused to do this for someone years ago based on this reason, he had someone else do it and just 2 years later all the moldings had already started to crack and come back. the darker the paint, the more time out in the sun- the worst this will be. good luck with your project, to each their own but im sorry man but in most people's eyes the car has been ruined. |
Mines been out in the sun for a little over a year. Still looks the way it did when i first got it done

I figured you would point that out. Generally Dura glass aka ("cat puke" at the places I worked) is used for instances where real hackery is involved.
Ive worked with cars from the teens to modern and you get a feel for what makes a car "worth less" and what your doing to it is on that list. Im sure you like it but you cant hide from the truth. You need to be damm good to hide what your doing there under paint, especially with todays multi stage stuff. Explaining the downsides to this is not being mean, its just pointing out the obvious. In a few years that will at the very least show through the paint at 10 feet. But, like everyone is saying here, to each is own.

If its done right (i dont know if your doing right or not) it wont really crack unless its hit.
The previous owner did it to my car (at least 9 years ago) and it only cracked where they shaved the door handle on 1 door. Personally i think it looks better BUT i do love a nice clean 7 with the trim intact. Its all gravy. old picture http://i702.photobucket.com/albums/w...zda/rx72-1.jpg |
i found a few pics of a white fc on here a couple of years ago that had the moldings filled in. that car was super clean! i have tried finding the pics again but can't remember which thread it was in and waaay to many pages in the pics of your fc thread to even attempt to search again. would love for someone to post those pics here so everyone can see how good it could look. personally i have mixed feelings but m an s4 guy and love the black side moldings. i thin that on an s5 car where the moldings are color matched already that it should look very nice
