88 rx7 a/t very slow acceleration

i just picked up an 88 gxl a/t thats been sitting for yrs, cleaned out fuel system replaced fuel pump got it running / driving but is very slow? I have checked timimg, compression, set tps, plugs, wires, pulled o2 sensor to see of cats were plugged but still is very slow? It idles & runs good & starts to pull a lil in higher rpm but accelerates very slow. The guy i got it from said he had the motor rebuilt & street ported before it sat? I was trying to figure out how to read any codes it might have but not sure if i need a specific tool or what i need to do so? The car is completely original & has all stock emissions (ca) the linkage for the ports seem to move ok? Not sure what else to check? Also i haven't hooked my smoke machine up yet but ive checked most all vacuum lines & havent seen or heard any obvious leaks also ive sprayed some carb cleaner around while running to check for leaks & haven't found anything the car was stored in a barn & the vacuum lines are actually in pretty decent shape? Any thoughts on what i should check next would be very much appreciated

are the gears changing slowly with the automatic transmission ? or are you just saying it goes very slow up untill it hits higher rpms? Also please do yourself a favor and have a plan to put a manual trans in this. Also you can make a code tester with 2 led lights. everything you need to know about reading codes is here.
