88 RX-7 won

o.k., I drove it to work, about 30 minute drive. Came out 3 hours later and it won't turn over. I've flooded it before and it doesn't have the high revving noise like it is flooded. It doesn't even act like it wants to turn over. I tried the flooding procedures with the fuse 5 times and nothing. Would it be the starter? Thoughts? Oh, and we put jumper cables from my wifes car to the Mazda and they fried in less then a minute. Smoke and everything. Thanks Mike

Either the battery is shot or you guys put the cables on wrong. That is very dangerous! If you see smoke coming off of jumper cables pull them off ASAP, or run.

I bet your battery is shot. Maybe you have some elctrical gremlins, but I would suspect the battery first. I would pull the cables off of the battery and test to see if it drains itself by putting a volt meter on it for a few hours. See if the voltage drops without anything but the meter hooked up to it. It may go down like 2 tenths of a volt just due to electrical error on the part of our cheap volt meters we buy. If the battery checks out OK i would then try pull or push starting it. This would be the first thing but it is much harder to push a car 10mph then it is to test the battery. If the car starts during the push (bump) start then your starter is probably shot.

That should hold you over for a few hours.

Considering that you said that you put jumpers on the car and it "fried",... check your main fuse. This is a 80amp (or so) fuse that is located near the same fuses for the flooding procedure. This is put there as a safeguard in case you accidentally cross jumper cables, etc.

After you replace that, the dashlights and other electricals will come on. Now, it will be a time to inspect your alternator, battery, and starter.

BTW: what is "88 RX-7 won" supposed to mean? In the future, please be more clear w/ your thread titles. I almost decided not to look at this thread, let alone post a reply.

Does the car even turn over? You weren't very clear about that.

If it doesn't turn, then you're looking at a pooched starter. By the description, it looks like it has shorted. Test it out of the car with a small 12V battery.
