88 GXLengine removal

K guys my parts car's engine is comming out BUT I need to find an engine hoist. Where could I buy one? Wankel7 has suggested I build one but I don'e know what dimmensions or what kind of wooden beams or steel to use. Has anyone made their own? I only have about $50 to spend on this so it has to be low budget. I have already checked autozone.com to see if they had it on their tool loaning program but they onlly have the chain that hooks up (around) the engine. If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks!

The Parts Source, Pepboys, Autovalue, local parts stores, places like canadian tire. Places around here charge 30$ canadian for 24 hours with an 80$ deposit.

You can lift it out with three people. Just have one on each side, and someone to support. There not that heavy. Just takes strong men.

engine cranes only work if you have a good floor to roll it on. if your a backyard mechanic like me you need to build a tripod over the front of the car and have a chain block at the top, then you pull the engine up and roll the car back

there not cheap man. I know there about $200 cdn but im not sure what they go for in the US probably $130-$150. lots of auto parts places will rent them or if all else fails call a tow truck and see how much they will charge to hook up to your engine and pull it out, probably $30 or so

OK that link was very helpfull thankyou.

Just one more question. What kind of capacity do I need? I am only going to use it for 13b's and rotary engines and maybe in the future the tranny. WHat kind of weight capacity do I buy? They have some for like 1 Ton I am thinking that would be all I need right? and what would I need to hook it up to. I was planning on building a frame out of wood or maybe steel. I don't have a garage or anything to hang it off of so I need to build something right? I was thinking about two A's and a connecting piece inbetween?

1 ton is pleanty enough to lift most motors rotary or piston with the tranny still attached

Ok the engine hoists are like 50 bux for a 1 ton capacity an engine crane is like 220 dollars for 2 ton capacity. I am thinking it would be cheaper to build something and buy the hoist and slap it onto the frame.

I used the beam in the garage, drilled a hole all the way through it and inserted an eye bolt with a nut then attached a come along to it jacked it up and then just moved the car backwards and lowered it to the floor.

Make sure it is a support beam and not some cosmetic thing.

Yes, and on the back of a truck. I dont think theyd care if you took it apart and put it in a car. More time you wasted and the longer you are gonna have to rent it.

I can get one for 250$ canadian, new. You can probably get them used for quite a bit less.

You can put wood planks under the wheels so you can move it. Or you can roll the car.

This could be true, but like most engines this one probably has to be put back in the car, which would require a hoist, unless your strong men can hold it up long enough to bolt it to the tranny and the car.

well right now it is staying out of the car. I plan to rebuild and port it later but it will go into the 87 and the 88 will become a trailer queen most likely i will be gutting her out and putting in a TII engine and have it be my track car.

I wouldnt suggest lifting it. I lifted mine alone off the back of my truck, but I wont do it again (lol I lie ). But lifting it out of the engine bay is akward, and there are good chances you could drop it (imagine you being under the car undoing motor mounts and it falling on you ). And putting it back in would be damn near impossible by lifting it (takes a lot of fiddling to get it onto the tranny input shaft). I suggest hit up the classifieds (or similar) and find a used hoist.
