88 GXL - Rest In Peace

A couple of months ago, the Canadian GXL was rear-ended by a Honda during a *freak* rainstorm. The car was totally drivable, so the insurance adjuster worked with me to NOT total the car.

Insurance paid $1300. I replaced the left rear light, bumper, bumper cover, exhaust. Reshaped the left rear fender and repainted that quarter of the car. Out of pocket was about $200, labor was all mine.

Last Wednesday, one block away from that accident, a text-messaging Coed slammed her Honda Civic into the back of the car. This time the left rear axle was pushed up to the driver door.

This time the car is finished, totaled. I lost a perfect set of BBS Vert wheels and the 4 newish Sumitomo tires. The insurance company was very fair and made an accommodation for the tires and for the Pioneer stereo and speakers.

Memory Lane:

Looks nice man, sorry for the loss. Your next car will be better though, much better. Look at this as your cahnce to upgrade RX-7's.
Will you be getting another one? Interested in an original 91' TII at all?

Sucks man.

At least insurance is being good.

Make something good out of this shitty deal, like finding a mint 10AE or TII.

Good luck.

that sux sorry for your loss. worst part is that rx-7's are becoming more and more scarce, and another clean good looking rx-7 is now gone, due to a moron honda owner driving their 1 out of millions civic.

do not let your loss go to waste, if posssible let your car be a donor

Oddly enough, I lost my 97 civic to a drunk co-ed , smashed into the rear quarter and the wheels looked like "back to the future" The proceeds from that bought a 99 camry which I sold on ebay to buy my first T2.

Sorry to hear man... At least you could part it out and make a lot of the money back, or as a few others already suggested, use it for parts on your next project. Hopefully the next one is just as clean, as I'm sure it will be!

Thanks for the words.

The car was my college age son's daily driver. Everything worked, started, idled and ran perfectly, LSD worked, A/C=brrr, didn't rattle/squeak, decently nice new Pioneer stereo and speakers, averaging 18 mpg, leather seats in pretty good condition and an aluminum hood. It was a car you could get in and just drive.

However, like many pictures you see on the web, the reality is not quite as nice as the fantasy. It has 345,000 kilometers(Canadian), smelled like a 7, had extensive rust underneath (Canadian), hail dents, my Rustoleum HVLP paint job, and averaged 18mpg.

Bottom line is I paid $500 for it two years ago, had to put in a clutch, replace the u-joints(twice), pop in a stereo, put on my 'Vert wheels, minor prep and paint. I think we put on 30,000 KM on the car in two years. Not counting the tires, I had less than $1000 in it.

We will miss it.

It's not the Hondas, it's the people who drive them. :-)

For the record, my Dad, myself, and my brother all drive Hondas, and apart from my Dad hitting a dear (at the one time he can't avoid one), and my stupidly breaking off my passenger side mirror (due to some garden tools falling in the way and not noticing them), none of us have killed any RX7s with our cars :-).

On the other hand, we all know better than to text while driving. That's a dangerous practice, and there's a reason that laws have been passed or are being considered to ban such behavior. The rather graphic and lengthy UK ad on the dangers of texting while driving should be shown in drivers' ed.

I know first hand that bad weather can lead to a crash (I got into my first collision during a heavy snow storm that I shouldn't have been out in the first place). People go too fast for conditions to allow or simply don't know how to drive in bad weather, or didn't have sense. In every instance when I got into trouble (getting stuck or off the road), it was because I was doing something I shouldn't have been doing.

Hondas...always up your ***.

I bought a fairly nice 2004 Mazda6 with the proceeds of the two insurance claims. I replaced the pads, rotors and fluid, installed an Ipod interface, put in a couple of less worn-out front seats courtesy of MazcaNissanHeaven and away we go, all under budget. Probably is a better car for a college student.

I still have my 90 'Vert and my 10 Anni project.

The only Honda we have that's capable of keeping up is an '05 Accord Hybrid with 180k+ miles. The other two, a '95 Civic DX and a '01 Insight don't exactly encourage you to speed.
