'88 GTU or '88 Vert, choices, choices, please help :)
I'm buying a 2nd Gen tomorrow. I've been mostly into 1st gens (I own an 85 gslse) and know little about the second generation.
I'm looking at two RX7's.
1. 1988 Convertible / Targa with 84K in excellent condition, interior spotless, engine so clean I could eat a meal off it. The owner kept it garaged every winter.
2. 1988 GTU with 106K miles in excellent condition as well.
Obvously one might think that the lowest milage wins in some cases, depending on model, I suppose.
Again, I know little of the second generation, other than the fact that I'm seriously fanatical about RX7's and love the second Gen appearance and handling.
On that note, which model (88 GTU or 88 vert/targa) would "you" prefer...and why??

The GTU would spank the vert. in a drag race. There is a nearly 400 pound weight difference between them. They are both S4's with 146hp stock. If you are used to a GSLSE with a 13B, 135hp powered 2500 pounder, I would definately consider the GTU as its replacement . . It would be an improvement in performance while the vert would be slower. But of course the vert would be great to own anyhow because it is a vert! You could just buy them both
My opinion...the '88 vert would be a good choice for a T2 swap in the future. Needless to say, the GTU would be also a very good candidate. If you are planning to take it out to track days, get the GTU. If you plan on a cruzer......the vert, but watch for rust.
Good luck......like the guy said above, "just buy them both".

Thanks guys
Thanks ppl. So the GTU would be faster. Man, how I wish I could buy both AND keep my GSLSE. I can only own one, since I live downtown and parking is not so good. I can't wait! I'll be happy with either car!

Bought my first Gen 2
I ended up getting the convertible. The interior started to rattle like an SOB after driving it home. Dashboard, door panels and molding and the top seems to rattle as well. I was hoping the interior would not act up this way.
I'm taking it to corksport within the next couple of weeks and see what they can do for me. I'm one of those guys who enjoys a nice quite ride. But the car looks brand new and with 85K on the engine, I'm willing to put some money into it to silence the interior.
I'll get some pics up when I can.
wish me luck
