88 GTU or 323 GTX?

I'm 19 and off at college (which is over in less than a week) and apparently my old car broke down and is too much to repair, so basically I'm on the lookout for a new car.

After doing extensive reseach, etc etc, I've come down to either an 88 RX-7 GTU or a Mazda 323 GTX. The advantages of the GTX over the GTU is that it is AWD and has the ultimate sleeper effect (a fugly car). The 88 GTU is the best N/A RX-7 and I'm really intrigued by the concept of a rotary engine.

Both are basically the same price, though the aftermarket is bigger for the RX-7.

I'm not 30 and don't have the luxury of having some 30 mpg daily driver and an RX-7 to play with on the weekends, so this car will be my primary car. But on the other hand, I'm not going to be putting a shitload of miles on it.

I don't intend to attempt to turn my next car into a drag car, just something that can take out the average ricer. I want a good handler, and both cars from what I've researched fit the bill.

What are your thoughts on this?

Well, I would rather have an RX-7, and if you want a project 88 GTU I have the car for you.

I think this group is going to be a little biased. But personally I would rather have the GTU (by the way the GTU isn't the best N/A that would be the GTUs note the little s). But then again FC's have been one of my favorite cars since I can remember.

Whether or not the GTUs is better than the GTU is a matter of debate. As I've read in this forum, there are many advantages of the s4 over the s5. The only obvious advantage of a GTUs is the 4.3 gearing, but that isn't a huge deal. I like the lower weight theme of the s4's

Well...they are both Mazda's...and last time I checked there isn't a forum specifically for both, though I could be mistaken.

I'm sure some of you have the sense or knowledge to comment on this car purchasing situation.

As to where I am in PA, I got to Villanova (west of Philly) and I live near New Hope.

As far as a T2 goes....hell no. I want reliability. Also, I hear N/A RX-7's are more rev happy.

First gen, maaaaybe. But their suspensions arent as nice as the FC's and they aren't super fast (not like a FC is either ).

Since only a little over 1,200 GTX's were sold in the U.S. no one might be able to answer this question, but its worth a shot.

Have any of you driven one, know a person who has, or have any of you actually seen one in "action"?

well, good luck finding a 323 GTX for the price of an 88 GTU! The RX-7 will be more plentiful, as well as cheaper initally. I'd like to think that maintenancewise, the 7 would also be cheaper than the 323.

and it looks a **** of a lot better! lol.

by the way the GTU isn't the best N/A that would be the GTUs note the little s

It is debated but both the 88 GTU and the GTUs are the best(and maybe 86 sport).

The 88 GTU is a turbo II without the turbo. It is light weight too. Power sunroof and mirrors and that's it.

The GTUs has the 4.30 and 10(est.) extra HP and like 4 TRQ.

It would be better to divide it by Series. The S4 N/a would be GTU and the S5 woulf be GTUs

Also starting w/ S5 the GTU took over as the base and wasn't as good as the 88GTU.
The one reason why everyone is like"OOOOHHH GTUs!!!!) is because of the rarity and the elusive gearing.
