Question 88 block swapped out for 89??

Well...if everything goes good w/ groundzero, I should be able to have my hands on an 89 block(it was streetported right) but I was wondering, how hard is it to just swap out my 88 motor for the 89 SP motor? I mean, I know I'll have to get the drivetrain and such, but I won't need a new tranny will I? What else will I need, I mean the extra 20HP stock would be an upgrade, lol...any info is appreciated.

I can't tell from your post if you plan to swap the entire engine, or just the block.

If it's the whole engine, many of the electronics are different. The '89 has a different ECU, different injectors, etc. Best bet is to get a complete '89 wiring harness. Even then you will experience some compatibility issues as some of the under dash connectors on the '88 will not mate to their '89 wiring harness counterparts. It can be done, but it will take some time and a wiring diagram.

Swapping the block is a different story, but then you aren't taking advantage of some of the performance gains Mazda gave the '89 - '91 models.
