your timming could be off, or you're running to lean or WAY to rich. any of those would cause too much heat.

if it was just the cats glowing I'd say there were clogged, but if it's blowning flames out with no cats there is something wrong.

If the car revs really slow and is really rough you might have lost compression in one of the rotors.

Does it not hold an idle? Does the car shake? If you answered no, then your motors probably in fair shape, just needs some tuning.

Hey anyone, doesn't the ACV control the airflow to the cat? So if the ACV went wacky, wouldn't that keep some air from getting to the cat, causing it to self destruct? Reason I ask is, on my 83, the ACV was bad, and when I got a new cat it turned cherry for about a week till I blew it out one day @ 8K.

So in effect can the ACV cause the cat to fail?

The car will not hold an idle now.The compression tests just fine. When it is running there is no strange vibration.I have felt a car that lost a rotor and it doesn't feel that way.It is really sluggish and just revs slow.I am under the impression that it is runnig extremely rich.I know nothing about turbo cars , so I am just lost. The turbo sounded fine when it ran well and you could hear it the wastegate blow off excess boost.Any ideas, thing to check?

Check your Pulsation dampner, to see if the screw backed out. When this backs out it restricts your fuel flow to your primary fuel injectors. This causes you to run really lean. When they run lean it'll turn cherry red. Gary

Yeah... make sure your leading ignition is firing and that the wires are not connected backwards. I've seen this symptom on a car with an MSD box that failed... (not in person, but I know of the issue... right Blake?) the leading plugs weren't firing, and it gave almost exactly the symptoms you describe. Yes, it would run, and even be smooth... but no power, revs slow, toasty-hot exhaust/cats. A clogged cat will do it too.
