87 tII stock turbo replacement

about to buy an 87 tii, but the turbo is leaking oil and creating a ton of smoke. Having trouble figuring out what the best replacement would be.

Is there a safe upgrade that won't require supporting mods (fuel, ecu, etc...)? Is the S5 turbo a straight swap?

If not, can someone suggest a good source for a stock replacement? The first place I called wanted $350 for a used one! Seems like I should be able to find one for $100-150...

no its not a straight swap IIRC. get a BNR Stage 1. its like $350 or something like that. and its a direct bolt on, and doesnt need supporting mods.

the first two mods to your car should be an upgraded fuel pump, and bigger secondary injectors.

That's just to push the stock turbo.

THEN worry about upgraded turbos.

The BNR stage 1 is $625 and will need fuel and timing mods at higher boost levels. The S5 turbo swap requires an S5 exhaust manifold with gasket, lines from your S4 turbo, and you also need to cap off the twin scroll line. Yes you should be able to find a used S4 unit for $100-$150 on this site. Search or put up a wanted ad.

^ 2400 duckets? I'll pass on that one. Find a good used one in the for sale section. You should be able to pick one up for under 200. IMO, i'd get a S5 manifold/turbo from the for sale section. It'll be a good upgrade for you, just because the wastegate design is better.

S5 is pretty much a swap all you have to do is put all of the s4 lines on the s5 turbo and have the s5 manifold and thats it.
