87 TII - 2k rpm idle - with video

I'll be buying the car this week, this is just a video he sent me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N14ibIwHHas

The car sometimes idles at 2k and a little under 1k. This is after warm up. It has 120k km's with 5k km's on rebuild.

He wasnt able to catch it when it was idleing properly.

What's the problem here? I'm thinking, tps?

nope thats all on the uim and tb. all stuff you can remove. aslong as your not a picky person and dont hop in your car and take off asap.....removingthe thermo wax will make you car no high idle and may not warm up as fast due to the cam that controls the butterflies will not let it be open muchfor start up. so you may have to play with the throttle for a little bit in cold weather. i have both gone on my and it doesnt affect me in tennessee.maybe just but your idle up to about 900

Cool thanks for the info.

Considering the worst that could happen in cost to fix the idle issue, how much would I be looking at? If it's simple I should be able to do it myself, if not there's rotary shops around.

glad to hear you've finally found a car...almost post some pics on the local forum if you get it.
I wouldn't worry too much about the idle issue, it might not even be a matter of replacing anything, just adjusting. i remember someone saying that one of the guys at forcefed made a really quirky idle PERFECT in a minute or two; they should be able to help you out.

The thermowax is probably really out of adjustment. No need to rip it all off, you can even disable it while still being on the car.

It is on the throttle body, and has coolant flowing through it. Basically, there is a cylinder filled with wax. There is a piston on top of this wax. When the wax gets hot, it pushes the piston up, which in turn moves a cam that hold the throttle plates open, and when the piston goes up, it will push the cam off of the throttle plates, allowing them to rest on the throttle stop. When it is cold, it sinks back down and opens the throttle plates open again.

It is for cold starts, when the engine can't keep itself running with the same amount of throttle as it needs when warmed up.

You can adjust how long it takes for the cam to come off the of the plates, as well as how far it opens the plates. That is why I say it's just misadjusted.

Hopefully it just needs adjustment. I probly shouldnt remove it either, seeing as I live in canada. Pretty cold here in the winter time.
