87 RX7turbo to 89 RX7turbo - Questions That Need Answering - Please Help

I have an 87 RX7(turbo), I'm putting an 89 RX7(turbo) engine into it.

1. If I change the ECM to the 89 model (I'm putting in an 89 engine), will I have to change any other wiring harnesses? if so, how many other harnesses plug into the ECM? which ones? will all of the other wiring harnesses currently on my 87 plug into the new 89 ECM and work?
(please be very detailed if you know the answer)

2. Does the wiring harness that runs from the battery to the starter also run into the inside of the car and connect to the ECM?

3. My backup lights stopped working, any suggestions as to what it might be? bulbs are good, they just don't come on. (perhaps the connector on the transmission??) how do i fix it?

If I decide to change the front cover for the metering oil pump on the new 89 engine that I'm putting in my 87 car and keep my existing 87 ECM and use my existing 87 wiring harness, I read the manual I have and the diagrams show a couple differences -

4. being that there is no EGR valve so there's no EGR solenoid switch(the blue green yellow things by the oil filler inlet) to connect its vacuum line to eachother and no place to plug the electrical connector on the 87 harness to.

5. The turbo's vacuum lines runs into a little switch/valve(the blue green yellow things by the oil filler inlet) that doesn't have an electrical connector on it,(on the 87 model the same switch/valve does have the same connector.)

6. How do I take care of these problems to make it work?

7. If I decide to strip off all of the accessories down to the block and use all of my existing 87 accessories so the wiring harness will work, and use only the NEWER TURBO, how do I make the newer turbo's vacuum lines work, what do i do with them? change the switch and plug in the electrical connector? will it work the same? ???

8. Do the 89turbo injectors have a different flow rate or pump out a higher volume of fuel than the 87 injectors, or can i use my 87turbo injectors in the 89 engine?
(they have different connectors for the wiring harness)

I know that's a lot of questions, but I would appreciate it if you could answer all of them if you are able. I may have a lot of work to do.

Thanks,
James
If anyone has an answer and wants to explain to me on the phone how to deal with some of these issues, let me know. I live in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Rip off all emissions/vac junk off the s5 motor, then use the s4 harness to connect everything. I believe it should work. Also swap on a s4 front cover. Maybe someone who has done this swap before will chime in. Although I know a simple search will answer most of these questions.

You seem to have a clue that there are problems ahead. I don't have all the answers......but if I were doing what you are doing. I'd get a download of the 87 fsm's Fuel section and a copy of the 89 Fuel section.

In both you will find a section dealing with the CONTRO UNIT. On that page/pages you have a list of each pin on the ECU'S. I'd look at those pages pin by pin and see what needs to be rearranged.

One thing I barely know, is that the 87turboii had a seperate KNOCK sensor. The 89 KNOCK sensor is built into the ECU. The location of the knock sensor is slightly different on each motor.

Did I hear the word *INJECTORS*? As you know, the early 87model used low impedence injectors. The 89 uses high impedence injectors. Now as you know the later half of 87 they also used high impedence injectors. If you do not have a solenoid resistor pack, located about six inches below the air filter assy, then you have high impedence injectors and have no worry.

Both cars use the 550 injectors. Keep the fuel pump.
