87 rx7 driveshaft ( manual tranny) I have lots of vibration. Can you help?
I have an 87 RX7, nonturbo with a 1.3 litre rotery. Now I have a whole lot of vibration coming from the either the trannyor the driveshaft or the the rearend. Im not familiar with maintnence on the car. When Im driving around in it the vibration starts right away, then when i put the clutch in it stops. So what is the prob. Anyone know?????

I had a similiar problem in my truck. It would vibrate at certain times and speeds. What fixed the problem was new universal joints like D. said.

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
Usually if its the u-joints the car will vibrate at certain SPEEDS, regardless of engine rpm, clutch engagement, or transmission gear. That is NOT to say it is NOT the u-joints. Have you considered the possibility that its bad tires?
To check your u-joints(non-replaceable btw) get undder the car with (hopefully already) the exhaust guards off(access to both ends of teh DS). Car in neutral, brake off(on jackstands hopefully). On each joint there are 4 bearings on 2 axis'. you want to check for play on each axis of each joint. Up and down, side-to side. There are little o-ring snap-ring type deals that hold the joints in. Sometimes one of those will fly out, and allow that bearing to slide in and out at will, causing motion along that axis. The back half is more comon to tear up. If in question, swap in another. With the heat shields off, its a 15 minute job after the car is up off the ground.

Like everyone said, it's probably the driveshaft. The 2Gen driveshaft is a bad design, and the U-joints start to lock-up around 100,000 miles. You can check for this by removing the driveshaft, and if you can't easily move the joint with your hand, then it is bad. I wouldn't recommend driving your car in this condition because my friend did that and the vibration got worse one day and destroyed his dash interior. IMO it would be better to get a new Mazda or Mazdatrix driveshaft, as a used one is not going to last very long, depending on how many miles it has on it. The procedure for removing the driveshaft (aka propeller shaft) can be downloaded from this site for free:
