87 RX-7 Turbo II

Ok, first of all, I'm new to the whole RX-7 scene. I myself own a 2002 Subaru WRX, and I found this site through the NASIOC/Nabisco site. Don't hate me... I come in peace.

Anyway. My WRX has outgrown my pockets... Time to get a cheaper car. I had been rolling the idea around of either a Nissan 240sx S13 model, or a FC3S RX-7. I have seen them around, and never knew much about them... initially thought they were pretty kewl when I saw Initial D. "The White Comet." Anyway I know that inandof itself is kinda lame, but it worked.

I have recently FOUND an absolutely cherry 1987 RX-7 Turbo II. It is in such good condition, its paint shines as good as my 2002 model. I was at a restaraunt and saw it in the parking lot, so I promptly wrote a note on a napkin and left it on the guy's windshield under the wiper blade leaving my name and number in case he wanted to sell it. I didn't think much of it until I found he had called me back as soon as he got home!

Come to find out the man is a car collector, and owns 8 or 9 garages around the city I live near, chock full of cars. I went over to look at the RX-7 closer and it is immaculate. And guess what is sitting next to it? A very intimidating 86 Porsche, the one from the movie Scarface, forgot the exact name -- think its a 944. Anyway... Its beautiful, got a rebuilt engine, larger turbo, analog MBC, and Hi-Flo exhaust with stock mufflers. His only explaination is that it is "Exceedingly fast." And that it is his toy, and that he drives it on occasion -- He's only put 3,000 miles on it in three years.

Here's the kicker. Guess how much he wants for it? $4,000 dollars.

Don't know if thats terribly good or not, but I think it is considering its age, and its condition.

Comments? Questions? Concerns? Something I should look out for in this car? Help me out guys, I think this car may be making its way into my garage soon... if I can dig out the cash and get him to let go of it.

From how you explained the car to look and the mods done to it, and having a rebuilt engine then $4000 is a GOOD DEAL...but there is a FAQ that completely covers what to look out for when buying a 7 but yeah it sounds like a great deal...just check that FAQ out and see what it has to say.

hmmm, another new user came here last week wondering about a 240SX and also opted for the T2 in the end, you wouldn't be his evil twin would you?

anyways, $4k is a high est unless it has a few goodies on it. if it is as fast and immaculate as you say then it likely may well be worth it. i have about $3k invested into mine ('87 T2) and i think i invested very well, it is far from immaculate but was well taken care of for a 162k vehicle.

Thats just it, the body has 170k on it, the engine has 40k he said.... the body mileage may be a few thousand off.

Thats why I say its incredibly clean looking.

well $4k is kind of high for a higher mileage car but as i said it all depends on the mods he has into it, if he has a standalone and an upgraded turbo/exhaust and the paint and interior is clean and it is tuned then i think it would be well worth it.

40K on a 87 T2....Damn thats practically brand new....like I said from what you are saying about this car its certianly a good deal, definitely with the mods it has and a rebuilt engine. Just check that FAQ over and see exactly what to look for and watch out for. But if everything checks out good after you take a better look at it and get to test drive it...then I say go for it...you will love the T2...its a "BAD *** CAR"

Where is this FAQ you speak of gwasshoppa? Stickied? I'm in the process of that.... skimming til I see something worth reading.... most of what I see is just yelling at newbies not to be *****.

EDIT: Found it

By the way, he said its pushing about 60-70 more HP than stock.... running 10psi he said. Oh and he also said "Extremely high-volume fuel pump" .....So he's thought about what he's done...

Hes either got a Walboro in there or a Cosmo 20B Fuel Pump. And at 10psi from what I have been told you are maxing the stock injectors which are 550cc. So ask him if the secondaries have been upgraded to some 720cc injectors. But yeah its definitely a good thing that the fuel pump is upgraded. Does the car have an S-AFC(Super Air Flow Converter or some sort of fuel controller)? Also check and see if he has upgraded guages...when you start raising boost its good to get some reliable guages...beginning with the boost guage...the stock one is horrible and very inaccuarate.

My friend bought a nice 240sx set up for drifting and a turbo ready to be installed. He didnt like it. It was slow and even though it had full suspension my friends 89TII still took him in the corners with just cut springs

The 240 was dog slow as well.

if you've got the bucks and think you can be rotory minded, remember it's another world. then go for it... you might ask why the guy would sell the car. but you need to drive the car above all first.

He has some sort of boost controller.... its not digital... looks like one you adjust with a wrench... Its purple, and sits on the passenger side fender well under the hood with a vacuum line hooked to it.

EDIT: And thanks for the tips, I'll ask about the receipts. And to go for a ride when there's no snow on the ground.

He DOES have what looks like an AutoMeter gauge on the column where the driver door is... forgot what that's called... had a brain fart.... Just that I believe...

compression test will let you know if the motor is in need of a rebuild. 4k is a good price if the motor is good along with the paint

If it's as good as it sounds $4000 is a good price to pay. I'd definitely take the pessimistic approach to buying this car though... It's probably a safer road. Oh, and def check the compression (search).

Don't know how I would check the compression, I bet he won't let go of it long enough for me to take it to a Dealership.
