87 N/A Tranny Question

Ok, from what i understand the n/a's trannys are weaker than the T2's to the point where you cant push lots of power though em or they die quickly, is it a select few peices that wear prematurely? when i put in my clutch (when ever that is) and my transmision is already off, might as well replace the bad parts

are there higher quality parts for my tranny? stronger syncro's or what ever else breakes?

NA Trannys

NA trannys are not as strong as their Turbo counterparts. You can install a later model turbo tranny in your NA if you are that worried.

I have had excellent service from my '86NA tranny. When I purchased the car it had the worn shifter bushings and a bad low gear synchro. I repaired those and have had no trouble since. I run Valvoline synthetic gear lube in it.

If your engine is stock and you do not dog the crap outta your car the NA tranny will give good service. I know of no source for stronger parts for this trans.

A short story (factory assembly problem & a tough tranny)... I was getting used to my 91na 127000mi – shifting from 5th to 3rd at 70mph without going through 4th. It worked fine, but as I slowed down to about 50, I downshifted to 4th, and BANG SCREEEEETCH, the wheels locked up. I popped it out of 4th >BOOM< and limped home in 5th. I had that sinking feeling – this is going to be expen$ive. I pulled the tranny in the driveway, took it apart, and found the lock nut on the main shaft had come loose, backed up & jammed 5th so tight I had to chisel the thrust collar off. It cost me $60 for the parts (2 lock nuts, thrust collar & retaining rings). I took a chance the bearings were OK and put it back together. Then comes the magic – synthetic gear oil. It’s been together almost 2 years, and I nail 2nd at 6k and chirp the oversize rear tires almost daily.
Tip #1 SYNTHETIC GEAR OIL.
Tip #2 If you’re in a hurry, short shift 1st (at about 6k) & nail 2nd
