i have a 87 but i crash it and i saw a 91 auto in excellent condition
and had everything original but a blown engine for $500 not bad
can i use my 87 engine,computer,tach/dash meter or do i have to change the whole wiring system
i only plan to us that engine to i get a 91 engine fully rebuild 2-3 months

From what I know, you can swap 86 through 88, but when you go newer than that you run into trouble. Different wiring harnesses, different ECU's etc.
Anything can be done, but at what price?

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
You could swap in the 87 motor, but you would need to use all the 91 accessories and senders and everything, but retain things like the intake manifolds on the 87.
The other option is to replace eveything on the 91 with the stuff from the 87, but it would not be very cost effective.
The 89-91 CPU would run the 87 motor, but you will be down a little on HP and mileage.

SO youre wanting to run the 87 motor in the 91 car. IT will work, here is what you need to do:
use the 89+ electronics, wiring, and intake parts, including oil metering pump and water pump housing and fan. Basically, strip the 87 motor down to the bare block, including removing the front cover, then replace all parts with those off the 91 motor including complete intake and vacuum spider, and injectors. There is a small bit of metal on the back of the block on the 87 that will hae to be cut off/filed down because the 91 intake will hit on it, it sits lower to the block. You might also have to block off the 87's egr, by removing it abd making a plate for it, I cant remember if 91s had egr or not, but the 87 egr valve might stick up too far as well. You'll see what I mean when you do the swap. You hae 2 examples in front of you, so take your time, take pics, drawings, labels, whatever. Try to remove stuff as a whole when possible. Then plug everything on the 87 motor back into the car's harness and start it up. It will not run as well as it should, might struggle to idle a bit, wont have all the power a 91 would, but it wil run ok.
IF it were me Id try to find an 89-91 motor or rebuild this one, but you can do whatever.
In return for that info, why dont you give me the blown 91 block asnd the 87 intake parts :-)

Sorry to hear that. Youll have better luck finding one that is in one piece already. IF you were closer to me, Id buy your car. Hell, I might buy both of them. GOod luck!
