87 FC3S Se, worth it ?....Help

Hey guys i have the opportunity to get a 87 FC se w/ 95,000 original miles on it for $800 bucks. it's silver, has the phone dial wheels, 5 speed tranny. the car has some minor rust on the side skirts and wheels wells, the paint on the hood and rear bumper is really faded/ peeling bad. The molding around the windshield is broken and protruding in some places, the windshield wipers don't work together proper, the shifter is loose and sloppy but tranny feels good. the whole car needs to be painted pretty much. The two major things it needs is a clutch and new exhaust all the way to the Y. I have a new clutch and new bosai exhaust for it already in the car. my question is, do you guys think this is worth $800 ? i can do the exhaust and body work myself, but i'de have to have someone do the clutch and paint the car. the car was never driven in winter, though it sat through many winters. Help me out guys, gimme your 2 cents on this. This was meant to be a winter project but i don't wanna get too ahead of myself. Thanks alot for any input

as long as the rust isnt horrible it wouldnt be a bad investment, how's the motor? you can get thoes windshield mouldings for a couple bucks from a junk yard. it never hurts to see how low they will go though lol

The motor has 95k orig miles on it and runs really well, no idle problems. idled at just under 2,000 for about 2 minutes, then dropped down. no smoke for the most part, just needs a tune up from sitting around. the rust isn't horrible, it's past surface in some spots but, some body filler or glass can fix it, one quarter sized dent from golf ball in the door. i drove it w/ the beat clutch, it went well, i just could'nt really step on it because the clutch would slip i guess.

Pics of the '87 FC Se

Ok guys, here are some pics of the car i'm gonna go pick up for $800. It'll need paint, some body work, engine is low mileage & runs great, 1 adult owner, i have a new clutch and brand new full exhaust that i need to put in. what do you guys think ? this will be my first Rx-7. has little dings and some minor rust, but pretty good for a 19 year old North East car.

OOps, yhats me eating the biggest sandwich ever....it stays!

For $800 bucks buy it, thats a hell of a deal. I paid $1000 for mine and it needed the engine rebuilt and alot of other stupid work, and now it has some minor accident damage on the front

But for only $800 bucks you have a really good base point to start at , since at least its running good and it doesnt have high miles. Just check out for oil leaks and stuff like that, mine has a small oil leak on the oil pan to this day.

Thanks for the input. it does run really well, I didn't notice any leaks anywhere after driving it for about 20 min or so. Main probs are that i have to put the clutch and exhaust in..a pain for me. Other than that i'll be spending some time sanding....oh well. I've been curious about the rotary for a while now.

There are alot of free mods you can do yourself to give more hp at top end (6000rpms and up). If youre replacing the clutch you could replace the flywheel with a lightweight one too, I have a lightweight steel racing beat one in mine.

If it holds idle and drives fine it has decent compression. It may not have high compression but it still could have very good compression, I've seen stories of motors with over 100,000 miles having at least 100 compression on all faces or more.

It's always safe to assume the car would have been redlined alot in its lifetime, unless owned by an old man or something. Most important thing is making sure the oil is always changed before it gets dirty (black) and always full and same with the coolant, make sure the car never overheats.

Like i said, the idle starts off higher, than smooths out after a minute or so, that was on a day that was 40 degrees outside. Idle doesn't pulse at all, my buddies does that so i know what thats like. The previous owner def had some fun driving it, but he's a a 50 year old man that kept it well. Never ever driven in winter, just sat outside during winter on his driveway :0( he said to me, "obviously it doesn't have the same power it had when new, but it's still real snotty in the top end". I wasn't able to really get on it cuz the clutch is so bad. Do you guys trust any businesses to do a full tune up on your RXs or do it yourself ?

All you need is new sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, new air filter, and id replace the fuel filter as well and put a new waterpump, thermostat and all new belts. You can do all of this yourself and its all pretty easy. There are a few other things you should check too like the fuel pressure dampener, they can cause engine fires if they are bad.

Oh and how it idles high up when you first start it is only the advanced warmup system which allows the car the warm up faster. Every rx7 has this.

i've never changed a waterpump or a thermostat...ever. If i go on a site for these parts, is the RX the type of car that likes things opposite of whats suggested by the sites ? it's that way w/ SR20DE cars, the things listed for them on sites are always wrong...

did you check the actually undercarriage for rust? i made that mistake and i'm ending up stripping the good parts from my 91, letting friends and family swing at it with an axe, and once i roll it into the garage and harvest the good parts im cutting it up for scrap

if that car is rust free inside the wheel wells and underneath and theres no hidden body damage pick it up.

I've been looking for that "Fuel pulsation dampener" on a few sites ( www.rockauto.com) and can't seem to find it. Would this be it ? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,6120

Also, the only rust is the rust I showed w/ pics. The under carriage is in good shape, it wasn't driven in snow/winter. Thanks

It looks like this
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...hmentid=204787

and if it hasnt been replaced it may be leaking and will probably catch your car on fire.

Um, Thats Dope...is it easy to tell if it's leaking and if so, easy to replace ? That little piece costs $160.00 WTF ? great. And i believe it's called a fuel pressure damper

Well a lot of people replace that thing with just another bolt, like the bolt that is in the other end of that rail, and this is called a banjo bolt. IF i tell you to do this, however, people will be in here in a matter of seconds telling you and me that the WHATEVER damper was designed for a reason, blah blah blah, but no one i know of has had a problem with a banjo bolt. My car has a banjo bolt.

Hmm, what size banjo bolt would I need ? also, how far do i thread it in..etc. Remember, this is my 1st Rx-7. And Fumihiko, what would you jump on ? That price $160 ? Thats the everyday price on rockauto.com

^ I think he means buy the car, and Im not sure, because I didnt replace the damper with a "banjo bolt" myself, but do you see the bolt that goes into the opposite end as the damper? its on the bottom in that picture. I *believe* they just get another one of those and screw it in place of the damper. Don't take my word for it though, because like i said im not the one who did it to mine.

that car should be good to go if you get good bodywork done to it. Don't do some cheapo maaco crap.
