I need to buy a T2 trans for my T2 transplant into my 83 and was wondering which one was better? Is one stronger than the other? I know that the 5th gear is a little diff from the two but what else?

89+ hjave better gear ratios, more aggressive. Also their throws are shorter and the transmission is stronger internally

87 T2 ratios:
1st 3.483
2nd 2.015
3rd 1.391
4th 1.000
5th .762

89 T2 ratios:
only change from 87 is 5th is .756

91 T2 ratios:
only change from previous T2 trans is 5th .719

So there goes that "more agressive ratios" out the window. Based on the ratios I'd want to get the 87 one for the less granny 5th gear. But I guess the major concern to me is will a n/a rear extention housing from a FB fit on a 89+ trans? I know it will fit the 87-88 ones because I know of someone that has done it.

Will a 89-91 turbo tranny or 3rd gen tranny work in a 87 turbo with no modification?

89-91 will work if you have the 89-91 mount. A 3rd gen won't bolt right in.

How hard is it to put an 89 mount on and does the tranny bolt right to the engine and use the same driveshaft?

The mount goes on the transmission. Yes, it will bolt to the engine and use the same driveshaft.
