Is '87 5 spd Trans compatible w/ '91?
The 5 Spd Trans in my non-turbo '91 Rx-7 is shot. Not rebuildable. I have a parts car. A non-turbo '87 Rx-7 'Sport' (predecessor to the GTU) with a servicable but high miles 5 spd. PROBLEM: I'm told that the transmissions in the '86-88's are different from the '89-91's even though they are both 2nd gen. WILL THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE '87 FIT INTO THE '91 WITHOUT HASSLE? Can anyone help? I'd like to know before I pull out two transmissions. Many thanks! -Mike-

It will provided you use the crossmember from the sport aswell. I think the shifter is slightly differnt though, so get that from the sport too, and you might have to splice wires, though i didnt when i put an s5 trans in an 88... so...

um, no, the 86-88 crossmember mounts to the bottom of the trans, whereas the 89-91 crossmember mounts to the sides of the trans, thus they only slide in if you have the crossmember that goes with the trans. I just did this swap last week on my friends car.
