86 vs 89 NA Tranny, dynamic damper

Does anyone know the significance of the dynamic damper on the post 88 trannys? I blew my 89 tranny on my track car and have a low mileage 86 tranny and when I took the extension housing off both I said Holy Cow that massive damper must do something. I'm guessing it absorbs a lot of drivetrain abuse and in a track car using a tranny without the damper may lead to a failed tranny quickly? Any experience?

Thanks, Jamie
