Angry 86' Turbo II with Hesitation

Hi guys,

Just bought myself an 86' Turbo II and I couldn't be happier!! It's a great car to drive and to look at.

I have a problem though, the car accelarates smoothly right up untill 5500 rpm and then it's got a huge flat spot and won't rev any further. It feels likes someone has turned the ignition off when it happens. The car also seems to be running quite rich and has very strong exhaust fumes. I have only a basic understanding of the rotary engine but I was thinking maybe I have a problem with the ignition system itself or maybe the TPS is faulty or misadjusted. Has anybody else had this problem or does anyone know how to fix this, any help would be gretly appreciated.

Thanx in advance!!

Shazam,

Hey welcome to the forum.

Are you seeing any "check engine" lights, does the turbo spool up properly, do you feel excessive heat coming from the middle of the car, etc..? Any other symptoms or things you've noticed may help us.

A few common items for high rpm hesitation:

If you haven't already, get the 60K mile service (how many KM is that??) and fuel injector cleaning services done. This could simply be timing or fuel filter related.

After that, high rpm hesitation can be caused by:
dirty fuel injectors,
old/worn spark plug wires
old spark plugs,
clogged catalytic converter
O2 sensors need replacing,
dirty fuel filter,
diry fuel strainer (in the gas tank),
clogged air intake,

Vaughnc,

Thanx for the reply!

I don't get any check engine lights. The turbo spools up properly and the car accelerates just as hard as my friends 90' Turbo II untill the flat spot. The car has had all it's services done up un till Ibought it. It has 120K KM on the odometer right now which is about 74K Miles.

One thing I have noticed is that after I start the car and let it warm up once the idle speed starts to decrease it gets to about 1600 rpm and the speed drops to about 1000 rpm, it then increase to 1600 rpm and repeats this about 5 or 6 times.

I was going to pull the car off the road and do all the things you have suggested, I've taken the car to a couple of shops and they've suggested everyting from a stuffed ECU to a drop in fuel pressure. Thought I might try and fix it myself and try and save some money and learn a thing or two in the process!!

change the fuel filter, make sure the air filter is clean. change your spark plugs and wires, check and set your TPS and timming.

your cats might be cloged if they are all stock

and lastly don't take it to a shop that doesn't know how to work on an rx7, and that includes the mazda dealer!! they will just make it worse if they don't know.

Shazam,

Any good rotary mechanics in Brisbane? If your talking to a regular mechanic over there I wouldn't listen too much.

Now if you find a sports car mechanic, espeically one versed in rotary cars, you might listen to what he says.

If it's running rich & your smelling exhaust fumes, this could point to a clogged catalytic converter. This is assuming of course the previous tuneup services were done correctly and everything else on the car is set correctly.

The jumpy idle can be affected by this yes. You might also check for any air intake leaks in the plastic piping or look for gaps in the metal intake on the engine.

Some other members on the forum may have some ideas as well.

Obviously being high rpm related chances are it's either a problem with fuel delivery, fuel/air combination & spark, etc... Air intake leaks can cause the computer to mix air/fuel incorrectly and improper fuel delivery (fuel pump wiring, fuel filter, fuel strainer) will give you a similar problem.

Can you rev beyond 5500rpms while not in gear?

Vaughnc,

There are a couple of specialist rotary shops here but a couple of my friends have a had nasty experiences with them and I'm hesitant to go to them.

A couple of other things that may be useful, it's uses alot of fuel I'm lucky to get about 300km from a tank(I'm a conservative driver the car spends most of it's time below 3000rpm and off boost), hot starts are hopeless it just stalls, I have to put my foot on the accelerator just to keep it running.

Last night it was raining and I got heaps of whellspin into 2nd gear and it revved to about 6000 without a problem.

On a different note, what sort of rx7 do you have?? Got any pics??

Definitely an 86 model.

I was used to be under the impression that t2's were 87 onwards untill I found this one.

Shazam,

Do I have pictures? That's like asking the Pope if he's religious

Seriously though I've collected a huge amount of boydkit pics, modification pics, rotary rocket, hyperrev, etc..

Feel free to browse through an albumn or two.

Here's a few pics of mine. Nothing too crazy on the turbo II. I plan to get crazy on a convertible rx7 project I'm planning.
