'86 NA: should I convert to distributor and msd's?

Howdy all!

I have a '86 NA that has been sitting for several years. I can't get power to the coils even though the components have been checked by a mechanic. I thinking of saying the hell with it and just going with a distributor and msd set-up. Will this work with the factory FI?

I see racers using the distributors. Any 1st-hand knowledge on this would be great!

thanks for the relply's

Yes, you can do it. Just pull the dizzy and coils from an 81+ 1st gen.

However, tracking power to the stock (and very good, by the way) 2nd gen coils is not hard. You should be seeing 12V at the black/yellow wire with the key set to IGN. If not, then you either have a blown fuse or problem with the main (EFI) relay. There could also be a wiring problem but since there are three separate black/yellow wires (one for each coil) then it would be unlikely to see a problem effecting all three without also effecting every other black/yellow power wire.

Is the 48 Ida kit or holley kit more streetable, i.e., starting and idle, low-end response?
