86 NA---I need a guru....HELP!!

OK--here goes--

I have read the archived posts and done the searches, but this seems different.....It would appear my GXL has a problem with bad flooding, and I have tried the unflooding trick. It started briefly, but died right away, and it did smoke like hell. Here's the different part--all the posts that I have seen about this talk about how you park the car and then it wont start....mine was driving down the road with no problems, and all of a sudden, it started sputtering and died. that was the last time it started. I tested it for spark and it has spark. I tested it for fuel and it gets fuel. I checked for compression as soon as we towed it home, and this thing had NONE at all--when I turned it over, the starter whined steady like there was nothing attached to it!! After we tried to unflood it, compression was back, but we didn't use atf--just a bit of oil. In taking various things off, I noticed that the connector fro the afm didn't look right--looked like one or two of the connections was broken. Where else should I be looking here?? I intend on pulling the injectors this week and having them cleaned, and also a tune up. PLEASE help me get my rex running!!

what are the compression readings?

Are these all done?
1. check fuses, battery charge...
2. check all vacuum hoses.

I will hafta get back to you on the comp readings...hafta run the check again. I can tell you that all fuses inside and under hood have been checked and all good...and also brand new battery--I am putting the new battery cables in tomorrow too. won't be able to try to start it until my new afm gets here, as the connection for the old one is toast as I said earlier. I will hafta ask the guy who helped me on the compression--he is a mechanic. I can tell you that it made three even bounces, but I dont recall the numbers
anything else I can look at here as well??

Well, have you done any basic troubleshooting? Do you have spark? Have you tried the (gasp!) ATF unflooding procedure? What is the compression?

the afm has a switch in it that turns the fuel pump on, so if you were to roll the car the afm closes and the fuel pump stops. if that connection is bad it will shut off

Here's the thing though--it is getting fuel, so I would have to think that the fuel pump is not getting cut off. while we were trying to unflood it, we could smell the gas. Also, I was driving it when this happened....it was nice weather, and I have never even had trouble srarting it before!! The only thing I can say is that my gas mileage was a bit lower than it should have been, but not really that bad. Then it just quit on me. Seems kinda strange that it would just cut out on the road like that, so I am thinking that something else is wrong in addition to the flooding....

I pulled out the plugs and sure enough, they are wet with gas/oil.....that is at least what I thought I would find.as soon as I get the new afm and hook it up I will try again.....
