86 GXL - exhaust pops when shifting gears
1.I got an 86 GXL (non-turbo) and lately if I am really gettin on it there is a loud pop when I let out the clutch and punch the gas. can you all tell me what might be causing this.
2.Also I just changed spark plugs and it is running pretty decent but the old plugs were all almost solid black is this normal?
3.And last question I have gone to every junkyard in town and cant find one with the plastic that goes around the radio and wondered if it can be bought anywhere I have heard they are very brittle and break easy.
Thanks guys this forum has always been a huge help.

1 thats called back firing
2 your car might be running a little rich then causing 1
3 if you can buy a S5 radio surround, it's rubberized, S5 is from 89-91 it won't break as easy

wow 90 bucks for a piece of plastic... sigh... thanks but I like the idea of using the 89-91 rubberized one and will just wait it out till I find one someday in a junkyard,
will the 89-91 fit the same as mine without any mods to it?
thanks guys

Yeah, it will bolt right in but you will need the air conditioner vent from an 89-91 (S5). In addition, you might want to pick up the S5 Shift boot assembly (Panel & Boot) so that way it will match the radio surround. The shift panel is rubberized too.

if your car is popping that loud it probobly throwing flames too.
its a great way to get peoples attention
since your plugs were black sound like youre running a little to rich, but dont fear you can still have flames and run *less* rich. my car runs rich, flames, but still doesnt faul the plugs.

what exhaust setup do you have? don't be so vague on such a kick *** subject next time
Racing Beat all the way for my 90 GXL. Header, presilencer & Mufflers, bad O2 sensor and probably a few other electrical problems along with timing issues but, it WILL shoot a flame!!!! Kind of cool when you have those tailgaters on your ***. Shoot a couple of flames and usually they will back off in a hurry!
Backfiring issue:
1.) Check the timing as mentioned above (Easiest to check)
2.) The Mazda BAC valves suck, and probably the cause. Pull the BAC valve and clean it with brake cleaner and then lubricate it. This has been documented many times.
3.) If your cats are dying they can cause excessive back pressure and cause this issue as well (Look to see of the cats are clogged.)
Plugs:
Same as above, but also look on the passenger fender (Close to the air intake box) there is an adjustment for the intake mixture (Marked Lean/rich.) Look at the Factory service manual to see if it is in spec.
Radio Surround:
Keep an eye on eBay they are sold there all the time.

Do not touch that screw... It is epoxy'd over for a reason. It is the lean/rich IDLE mixture screw. This will adjust idle mixtures only, and will not help any problems you are having.
I swear people need to stop messing with **** if they have no clue what they are doing. And then go spreading information around so other people can screw with it..
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT..DONT POST!!
