86 base turbo swap blog! (lots o pics)

My poor n/a engine is getting tired and has a blown oil seal, so time for a rebuild! But, I got a deal on a s5 TII block from a friend so now I am going turbo

The subject:

1986 base model
5 lug swapped from s5, GXL wheels
Tokico struts with RB springs

and now the engine!

Yes, that's a 12a turbo in the background.

rest of the intake

The engine is a s5 TII block, with full block off plates, dual belt alternator pulley, rebuilt alternator and new water pump. All of that and a downpipe for $500.

It is in good condition, but it's already on a stand and I have the parts to rebuild it so why not? :p

my turbo

For fuel control I bought a plug n play Zeal Engineering megasquirt from the group buy.

I got a TII hood a few days ago, but I dont have any pics of that yet. It's crazy how much lighter it is than the old steel one!

Since it is my DD, it wont be anything crazy. It needs to be reliable, streetable, and get decent mileage!

hahaha, actually I am going to do the $50 paint job like snowball.

5one5 innovations gauge pod, great product and awesome customer service!

TII hood, has some paint chips but no dents. Doesnt really matter since it's going to end up white anyways. The owner before the guy I bought it from drilled it for hood pins but it was cheap and local so I can deal with hood pins lol. I think the pins wont look bad at all once it is white. I know it is dirty inside the scoop, I just havent gotten around to cleaning it good yet.

I was going to use the n/a hood and go front mount, but I decided on the top mount for several reasons.
1. cheaper lol
2. the engine is going to be built (by rotarygod) on a stand and dropped in, it is my DD so the TMIC is much simpler and wont mean any downtime running pipes
3. It is suffecient for my goals
4. If I get a BNR hybrid later I can run alcohol injection and be safe on a top mount

Well, looks like we aren't rebuilding it now. It seems to be good.

Lack of money is killing me right now! haha Would a brand new stock n/a clutch hold for alittle while with easy driving? When I have the money I will get a new trannsmission (my syncros are screwed) and step the clutch up to a centerforce dual friction.

What does your friend want to get out of the Turbo 12A? And if it's not too much, would he be willing to ship?

I'm just curious, my dad has a REPU, I just want to know, I'll see what he says.

Ok, I will ask him about the 12a for you.

Well if I wait for another 2 weeks I may be able to get a centerforce dual friction instead of using a stock n/a clutch! lol

I still have a few things I need to get before everything can go together..
clutch
stock intercooler piping (may have tracked some down)
stock BOV
turbo to manifold gasket
turbo lines

I am getting the intercooler pipes and TB elbow from NOPR (thanks!) and I bought the turbo lines and a BOV. I almost have everything!!! I will begin putting the rest of the stuff on the block soon, once I get the turbo gaskets.

heh, kinda let this thread die awhile back and forgot about it
The engine went in with a few little complications. The wiring harness crapped out on me though so that just got completely replaced.

Here is what it looks like now though..

This pic is before the new wiring harness and cleaning the bay up some

and just because, here is what I started with

Im thinking that the next thing I should do is body work. :p

haha, no not brown!!! I want to respray it the stock color.

I think my stock bov is broken, and I really wanted something else anyways. Then I found this on the FS section..

perfect
Im going to paint it, make it look all purdy then polish my intercooler.

Wiring is all buttoned up, just need to reconfigure the megasquirt for the missing CAS teeth then tune.

The downpipe I got off my friend has a warped flange and it doesnt seal right, so I have an annoying exhaust leak. I think that just moved new exhaust to next on the list! Suggestions? I want to keep it quiet enough to not get pulled over and such.
