Re: is a 86-87 sport worth it?

If it runs ok, I'd buy it for $500. The sport is the lightest one I believe...

Just get a compression test so you know what shape the motor is in.

Check it out dude. The sport is the lightest 7 made in that year to me I think it is very worth it. The sport has an aluminum hood lighter than the T2. What I would do is buy the sport save your money get a T2 motor and an engine management computer. Something like a Wolf 3d or a haltech.

A sport w/o power windows and sunroof, is only a second slower than the 87 T2 in the 0-60 and a half second on the 1/4 mile. So your right around a 15.6.

Sports w/o power everything only weigh about 2600 lbs (vs the 2850 of a 87 T2)

if it has power nothing and a alum hod it will be the sport? it has gtu rims and no sunroof.. its been sitting for 6 monthes impounded...should i put in the atf before the compression test? i was thinking about puting the atf in and complain to the guy how bad it smokes hehehe....

What I would do is buy the sport save your money get a T2 motor and an engine management computer.
what put a t2 motor in the n/a car? would it fit with no probs?
i have a 89 gtu motor

Hi I wanted to help clarify things just a little. I do own a 87 sport and I don't have a Aluminum hood. I never heard of a sport having one BUT you never know with Mazda. It is one of the lightest RX7's next to the GTU. It doesn't have the rear wiper, power windows, power locks. It does have a little black rubber spoiler on the back, a front, and a sunroof. The GTU doesn't have a sunroof. I would recomend keeping the N/A motor. But if you really wanted to go Turbo, you should really buy a TII instead. Alot less work, money and hassle invloved instead of doing the conversion. Just my 2 cents. Good luck

I agree with everything he said. And like I said, if you don't want it, I do.

I also agree with most of what he said except that he must be talking about the GTUs not the GTU as most if not all GTU models had a sunroof, where most all of the GTUs's had no sunroof unless you ordered it.

My Project 86 is a sport, and it was really fast as an N/A, especially when I added a wet shot of NOS to it. It is now a series 5 TII conversion track car, and it is really fast as hell now =) It also has the 4 pot brakes. I say go for it!

Sorry I was thinking fast when I wrote that last night. Yup I was thinking about the GTUs. I always do that and then say the GTU. Thanks for looking out for me on that.

Ive had 2 sports or base models and they both had aluminum hoods. I heard that they are mainly on 86 base cars.
