720 miles on fresh rebuild.....update

I changed my oil for the first time since the rebuild today. I ran the car up to 720 miles cause I was busy this week seeing clients.

The oil came out a little darker than I would like and it smelled like Chem Dip parts/carb cleaner. I guess that may be from cleaning the rotors with it while rebuilding. It alse cvould be dark from when the water pump wnet south at 420 miles and a little heat built up.

I'll change it again at 1000 just to be sure that something funny is not happening in there.

You can't imagine........AFTER the rebuild all these periferal items have started going bad. I think it is due to 'new' stresses being place upon old parts as the new items are installed. fro example, I replaced all the vacuum hoses during the rebuild. One thing that happened for the better is I found the vacuum leak to the brake booster and the peddle was much easier to depress. The bad thing is soon the master cylinder went out.

Another thing was, I fixed all the coolant leaks.....then the water pump blew out.

That is what I mean by new stresses added.

Other than all that!!!!!! The motor is running great and stronger each day.

Nah man...I was just thinking about one of teh crappiest thing that can happen in a rebuild man.

When 1987Rx7Guy and I were stacking my engine I though about him and his rebuild project so many times. Maybe he helped me not pinch one because we were super carful on that.

I was really scared at that point. I DID have on seal that keep coming out of the groove/hylomar. I kept watching that one inparticular. I guess I get them to stay put long enough to drop the housing or next iron.

I didin't know you were rbud with 1987rx7guy. We always post up in the DoO

Congrats!

Don't worry about the oil just yet, the reason you change the oil at ~500, ~1000, and ~2000 (some do different intervals or less overall) is because all the lubricants, cleaners, and leftover junk on the internals are going to be working their way out and being swept away during the break-in. Nothing to worry about just yet

I've finally gotten over 2000 miles on my first rebuild of an 88 tII. I feel your pain on the aftermath of the rebuild where everything decides to go wrong and prevent you from putting those miles on the rebuild. I did the same by replacing all the vacuum lines and the same thing happened to me with the brake booster. Had similar problems with the cooling system when the fan clutch went out. Believe me, the little problems will be overcome and everything becomes worth the time, effort, and capital. Congrats on the success and I wish you the best of luck.

Ya, I blew 4 different coolant hoses in the first week of my rebuild!!!

I guess it comes with the territory. My car didn't run for about 6 months, so you gotta expect this kind of thing.

Nice work on the rebuild! Did you do any porting when the motor was apart?

I just got back from a drive. I clocked how slow you have to go in first gear (with my Automatci tranny) and the answer is no! I didn't port at all becuase of the "low end issue" or loss thereof. What a crock of ****. you have to be going slower than 17 mph to be below 3k rpm in 1st gear. My point is, thinking back, I should've ported the thing while it was out. loosing a little power for the first 17 mph would not have been too much of a loss.

Thanks for all the incouragement. This forum is great.

Ya I've had the same feelings about porting my engine while it was out. I chose not to port due to time and monetary constraints and also just being timid about what it would do to the driveability of the car for a daily driver. I've been happy with the resulting performance despite the inevitable problems due to attrition and constant use. Dont think in retrospect; learn from your mistakes and be the wiser for the next rebuild. Again, congrats cause the worst is over with!

Yah the supposed "loss" in the low end was not even noticeable to me when I ported, and I even converted from 6port to 4port by removing the divider and running the aux ports open all the time. Doesn't bother me one bit for driveability, and I even get better gas mileage now than before, which is surprising. However, I kept my primaries small for idle issues, and it really isn't a problem, so looking back I wish I had gone bigger.

The first build is always a learning experience, and they can only improve (at least in my mind) from there. Hopefully I'll be attacking an s5 n/a block soon to swap into my GXL and sell my current ported/rebuilt motor, I'm excited

Both you guys (dDub and BDenton) are right. Learning and Timidness are the two factors that kept me from doing more. Yea......I'll do another motor. It was a lot of fun. Not sure just when but I am always looking for the next chance

Hey I just got my rebuild back, still have to install it. Did anyone use new housings..? I didnt and I am wondering what to expect. Like how quickly do the new seals start to break in? Well I am glad to hear everyones engines are running strong. I should be joining the fresh engine club in about 2 weeks.

grats hammy!

have about 5k on my rebuild already and it is pulling down i would guesstimate 240RWHP and runs great.

going to add to those numbers real soon though, probably upwards of 300-350+RWHP once i get the FMIC project done and the standalone installed.
