700 miles on a rebuilt and still smokes like hell!!??

What could be wrong with my engine. I have 700 miles on a rebiult and it still smokes like hell especially when I start the engine and when I push the gas pedal to the floor and rpm goes up to about 4000-5000rpm and then I release it. I´ve heard that the smoke is normal on rebuilt but 700 miles?? Think that would be enough to get non smoking engine??? I also have I brand new turbo but could that cause the smoke?

Take it back apart and find out what was installed wrong. The rebuild might/will smoke on startup but the smoke should clear up in an hours running time. Most all the smoke should have just been excess lube that you used during assy of the engine. It should not smoke after that residue gets completly burnt out of the header/pipes. IMHO it's broke.

If the rebuilder re-used the oil control rings, they may not have been in spec... Those things are almost 300 bucks for both rotors, a lot of guys re-use them without really looking to see if they are good or not.

Just a thought but what condition is your turbo in?

Good call Dana...

Faster: you may wanna pull of one of your IC hoses around the BOV to check for oil. If it's soaked then your turbo is toast.

no one has mentioned your oil metering unit being bad. Mine was but they didn't look at it untill the engine was torn down and found nothing wrong. It was fine before the rebuild by the way..

causes for excess smoke:

-bad turbo. spitting oil either through the compressor side (visible in the IC piping) or the turbine side (not really distinguishable from carbon buildup). Take the turbo off, cap the oil and water lines, and crank her up for a few minutes to see if it still smokes without the turbo. It will be loud.

-bad oil o-rings, carriers, installation, or excess wear of side plates internally. All require a rebuild. IF your exhaust ports have a ton of carbon buildup, it is likely internal.

-running excessively rich. I have seen a couple of t2's have failed FPR's, which actually leaked gas into the vacuum supply line. Which in turn fed more of this fuel back into the intake, which ran down into the engine and resulted in a stumble/backfire, and quite a bit of blue/black smoke.

-bad omp, letting too much oil into the engine. Remove/blockoff teh OMP/lines for a few hours and see what happens.

I few questions:

1. If compression ratio is good, does it mean that I DONT have internal problems or is it still possible?

2. Is it possible that my NEW turbo is faulty. Im running 0.3-0.4 bar now so don´t know how it works higger boost pressure. Turbo feel OK but can you tell if it´s the turbo when you drive?

3. If I take lower spark plugs and both are clean the engine is fine, or if the other plug is dirty(or both) its the engine? oil ring or something..?

The engine starts up very easily cold and warm so that indicates it´s not internal, does it not!?

In a rotary, compression and oil control rings are basically unrelated.

Is it possible that my NEW turbo is faulty.
Unlikely, but possible. Are you running AN oil supply line? A small drain line? Perhaps there is too much pressure at the turbo, and you need an inline restrictor.

A turbo can boost fine but still smoke past the oil seals...

IF you notice a lot of buildup, then you either have an oil control issue (internal) or a very rich running condition (tuning). Either could cause the smoke.

IF you take your turbo off, and there is not a lot of carbon coming out of the engine, yet there is a lot in the downpipe, it is probably the turbo. Again, you can remove the turbo from the car, reroute oil and water lines, and intake path, test run the car, and see if it still smokes. IT is a lot of trouble, but is sometimes the only way to be sure.

make sure the crankcase vents aren't plugged before you do all that work

I forgot to mention that the car consume oil alot. I´d guess 1dl/100 miles(a guess). Smoke is "blue" so it´s burning oil. I just have to hope its not internal because then we have to open it AGAIN. But I have to try what you´ve said and try to find whats wrong.
Thanks

oil control rings bud....did you check them. Try checking the turbo inlet for oil.
