6 port turbo fuel pump resistor relay
Done a fair bit of research and got some conflicting information so I'm looking for some solid answers.
I have my '86 GXL 6-port turbo running with the TII fuel pump. I now have to pass emissions. I have all of the turbo emissions crud that will be swapped on soon, including a brand new bonez high flow cat.
My burning question is what about the fuel pump resistor relay that is present on the TII but not the NA? I know it lowers the voltage to the fuel pump on a TII car, but some stuff I've read says this decreases the rail pressure, pushing less fuel through the injectors (the ecu compensates) and some says this isn't the case and the point of the relay is only to increase pump longevity.
What I'm worried about is not having the relay is causing the ecu to dump in more fuel than it should be at idle and will make it much more difficult to pass emissions. should I be worried or will it not effect anything?
If it will help me pass emissions, how might I go about installing one? Possible to make out of radio shack / digikey parts? I'm quite handy with a soldering iron

.....k? NAs did not come with one stock, this much I know for sure.
I did a bit more reading and it looks like running the car without the resistor relay will make it run rich at idle and make it hard to start (I'm experiencing the hard to start. floods really easily).
Sooo the question remains how I might go about making/installing one. Anyone?

You don't need it. My car passed smog with flying colors with an FD fuel pump and no fuel pump resistor/relay. If your smog testing requires an idle test, adjust your mixture with the variable resistor. In CA it's the 2 speed test, and idle emissions are irrelevant anyhow.

Yeah the S5 N/A's have one. I removed mine and the car idles at 11.0 AFR@ 800 rpm, didn't have a wideband before so I don't what it used to idle at. Not hard to start at all though.
I would talk to your local enthusiast forum and see if you can "garage" it in another county that doesn't have emissions. I did it in VA and it was super easy, I gave them some storage place's address.
I honestly don't see how a 6 port turbo car on the stock TII ECU would pass emissions without tuning but I haven't researched it much. I would imagine it would at least need a new stock cat.

didn't know about the s5 NA having the relay. Thanks for the update
Interesting idea with "garaging" it in another county, but I think that might mess with insurance, maybe? I dunno, that's out of my realm of knowledge.
Our emissions here is a 25mph test and an idle test, no visual. At cruise (25mph) it's usually fine, so I'll just lean it out with the idle screw and hope for the best :P
