6.5 tower speakers

i dont know.... i must be crazy or something but 6.5's seem to be too small for my rear towers. after removing the stock speakers 4"? i left the bottom plastic peice in(part with built in amp) and set the 6.5 on and in falls right in the middle with no way for me to mount then to anything. knowing i'm prolly the biggest dumbass on the forum i did a search for my problem and read something about an adapter from Crutchfield. is this what i need? someone please help because i do now want my infinity references to go to waste. thanks

call crutchfield and get one of their terrible mounting kits...it comes w/ a cutout and screws to mount a 6.5 but the cutout is made of some very flexible kind of plastic board. Solid plastic would have been beter and a solid plastic covered with some kind of dynamat material is what they really should sell.

When I got mine the previous owner just set some cheap paper 6x9s on top of the shock tower, so they would fit if you got some custom enclosures made.

I don't think 6x9s will fit in any of the stock locations. You'd have to build a seperate enclosure to accomodate those (since they're too big) and, well, why would you? Any seperate enclosure should have subs in it and the higher frequency drivers should probably go in the stock locations.

I modified my stock rear tower plates. Apparently, there were 4" stock speakers, so I trashed those and enlarged the apertures with a jigsaw to fit a set of 6.5s. Then I put some 6.5s in the stock door locations and finally added a powered Kenwood 10" sub box just behind the storage bins.

Of course, this is a subjective account. There are those who'll dispute what I say and, hell, they may be right, but this setup has worked beautifully for me.

A true 8" speaker won't fit without cutting metal and modifying the grill.

To top that off, there is less than .25 sq ft in there so there is not an 8" speaker made that will sound decent with that little air space.

And why would anyone even want to use a 6X9 in there???

6x9s are one of the worst sounding speakers. The only thing they are good for is moving large amounts of air compaired to a 6" speaker. They are not linar, and have poor overall sound reproduction.

Mark,
Sound quality is a moot point whenever you're talking about a source being behind the drivers head anyways.

however, I do agree that 6x9's are shitty sounding speakers, regardless of placement.

They are radioshack special 8in full range speakers. They got 25w RMS.
Just checked the stock number : 40-1043

You did notice that the 400-1043 is only a 185mm speaker (making it really about a 7 1/4 inch speaker- rather than a true 8" speaker) as well as it only reproduces above 50 Hz (which is about the same as a good 5 1/4 inch speaker or bad 6 1/5 inch).

Why don't you just get some nice 4" inch speekers and put them in, and it would be nice if you would actually do sound staging. The way the stock speaker holes are set up is horrible. I really need to do somthing better with mine (other than stock) but I am going to keep on trying to sell my stereo, so screw that.

What can you expect from something form the late 80's early 90's...Putting perfect sound into the FC much less any car is hard to do--to many things get i the way...I don't think the sound was something they were focusing on it the first place... As long as I have clear sound and can get at least something out of my system thats all that matters anyway...I mean you start to battle location, sound cancelation, exaust, wind noise, etc, etc, etc...
First of all its a sports car not a luxury car so right there is the first restriction!! The car is made to handle and be fast, not sound perfect!!
At least with the 3rd gen the BOSE system helped a great bit...the overall pacement of the speakers is better!!
I'm not tryin to defer anyone from improving the sound quality of the FC, as I'm trying to tell it like it is!!

Actually, my 8" Kenwood subs fit nicely in there. To compensate for the small volume, you can get a special type of foam to fit in the bottom and some subs designed for low volume situations. Or do as I'm doing, cut a hole in the side of the metal wall and buy some plumbing tube large enough to get the needed volume. (You may need to do some math here) If you position the tubing right, you should be able to cover it with the carpeting or even go into the fender. Just be sure to fill up all those liitle holes in there with some form of sealent so your air doesn't escape.
I should do a writeup when I'm done the job, maybe I will.

i just finished mine yesterday.

i put 6.5 Rockford fanatic Q's in the back.

in front i have diamond audio 4 inch for the (under-dash) area

i have 5.25 fanatic Q components in the door. You can run 6.5's in there but it's cramped and hard to securely mount due to the mass of the speaker and shutting the door.

I think a 6.5 mid range would be the best for the rear fill. They can get a bit deeper.
