5 speed tranny fitment questions

i know this is a repost but the last title was somewhat misleading. Just wondering if a 5 speed tranny [s4] will have any fitment issues going into a 91 vert?

No problems at all. Make sure you use the s4 crossmember for the s4 trans. The s5 crossmember won't fit the s4 trans.

Good luck.

The S5 crossmember will fit the S4 transmission if the S5 rubber mounts are used. For whatever reason, Mazda decided to change how far apart they are between series.

That's strange as the '86-'92 side mounts are all the same:
39-340A-FB01

It's not the rubber mounts themselves that differ; the transmission mounting bracket is different. The S5 has 4 extra bolts that hold it onto the tail housing, and the rubber mounts are moved closer together to make room.

S4 NA trans mounting bracket: FB01-39-350A
S5 NA trans mounting bracket: FC02-39-350

You can see the difference in this picture of my S4 (left) & S5 (right) Turbo transmissions.

I do see the difference, but if the locations of the rubber mounts are different between series, how can the S5 trans be utilized with a S4 cross member? You can't transfer the trans bracket as the attachment points are different. Just need some education as it's been pretty common knowledge that the trans cross member must stay with the trans series.

playdeadva, you will have to make a crossmember extension like in the picture, since the mounting location for a manual trans crossmember doesn't even exist on an auto car. There's no option to drill/tap your own holes.

It's not relevent anymore since the OP is going from auto to manual, but yes, the brackets mount differently. This can be solved by drilling 2 holes through the S5 bracket to match the S4 manual trans bolt pattern, or even moving the mounting point further in (requires drilling and taping the tail housing). The best method though, would be swapping the entire S5 tail housing onto the S4 trans. All FC tail housings are virtually identical, and share the same 6 bolt pattern.

If you have access to welding equipment, weld the mounting brackets into the correct location.
