Well, show me how that bolt, almost 12" long, is going to slide out to the side, where there is all of 2" of clearance. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it aint gonna happen (without cutting or breaking something).
Dropping the pedal assy takes about 30 minutes, just go on and do it the right way.

To remove the pedal assy (from memory, some details may be left out)
Remove steering column. To do this remove the 12mm bolt in the engine bay on the shaft, under the brake MC. You must remove the bolt, not just loosen it. Remove the 4 12mm nuts/bolts inside the car under the dash holding the column up, unplug the wires going to it, and pull it out. Sometimes it helps to use a flatblade screwdriver or other wedge on the clamp (that you removed the 12mm bolt from in the enginebay) to spread it apart and help the shaft slide out. Expect to pull on the wheel/shaft very hard to remove it.
Now, unbolt the clutch MC (or blockoff plate for it in an automatic) from inside the car, 2 12mm nuts. Repeat for the brake MC, and the bolt under neath...5 in all. Dont forget to undo the pins that hold the brake MC to the pedal itself. Now there will be 2 more 12mm (I believe) bolts holding the metal pedal assy to the underside of the dash, remove these. There is a big harness bundle held to the pedal assy on the drivers side (top) by a 10mm nut. Unplug the fuel pump relay on the p. side of the pedal assy (top). Pull it down and out...this requires finesse to not break the dash speaker support area. It is a VERY tight fit.
