5 spd question

I drained the oil out of the 5 speed today,,,,,(it was normal looking,,,,,about 2.5 quarts),,,,,,then i filled it back up using coastal 80w90 gear oil which was the manufactures specified weight.

Before the oil change the gearbox was nice and quiet,,,,,with not one quirk,,,,,,,,,,but now it wines like a sun of a gun,,,,,,,,it has that real distinctive remote control car sound that many of the little 4 bangers have.

You know the sound,,,,,its the one when they are going in reverse WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

what would cause this whining,,,,,,its not just a little its REAL loud.

I can also hear it in the trans when in engine running and cars out of gear,,,you can hear all the rotating inside.

I also changed my motor oil,,,,,i went from 10w30 to 20w50, but i dont see where that would have anything to do with it. I also changed the rear diff oil (came out fairly clean),,,,,,,,used 80w90 in that also plus a bottle of limited slip lube (thats what the manf called for there also),,,,,everthing was filled to proper level,,,,checked then rechecked

stupid question, but are you sure it is full? because mine was whining like that after I swapped in a new trans because I didn't fill it enough.

another stupid Q, can I fill mY tranny with fluid to ensure it is full before I put it back on. Assuming it is off already, I'm not pulling the tranny just to fill it.

no not unless you have some way of blocking off the output shaft, or else it will just leak out from there.

Only if your rear seal is in OK condition, otherwise it'll seep out the driveshaft area.

1st, I have never heard of Coastal Oil... is a synthetic or???

2nd, does it meet GL-5 specs???

3rd, if it is a non turbo you should be closer to 2 quarts of gear lube in the tranny, only if it is a Turbo should there be 2.5/2.6 quarts.

From your description of the noise, the oil that you used is the wrong weight and/or type, or you damaged a bearing (how did you fill the tranny?)

Causes of tranny whine:Low fluid, incorrect fluid, worn out input and output shaft bearings.

Look at the bottle...
You're actually looking for GL-4 specs, as this is the specification for synchromesh transmissions.
Most gear oils are GL-5 spec, and it does not automatically mean it's safe for (bronze) synchronizers in transmissions.
If it says "safe for (synchromesh) transmissions" it should be okay, but I don't yours says this.
Note, GL-5 does NOT supercede (i.e. is better) than GL-4 stuff.

Typical gear oil has sulfates in it which helps with gear loading.
Sulfates also KILL bronze (synchronizer) parts.

I would drain it and put in some GL-4 or "synhcromesh transmission safe GL-5".

Go to autozone and get 'pennzoil syncromesh' tranny fluid, it's the same stuff GM dealers use/sell for $10 a quart. Works better than anything I've ever used.

I got some cheap stuff I was gonna throw in my, I'm pretty sure, blown tranny just for kicks. I think I'm gonna put that in my tranny until I get paid, about 2 weeks. Any problems with that?

Just go get the Penzioil syncromesh fluid to see if the whine goes away first.
