Exclamation 4-Piston Calipers and 1-Piston Calipers

Whats up rx-7 owners,

Is there any difference between the front 4-piston calipers and the 1-piston calipers?

I have an 87' rx-7, and the car currently has 1-piston calipers, can I replace the 1-piston calipers with the 4-piston calipers? Will there be any modifications?

Also, if this conversion works, does anybody have any front 4-piston calipers or front 1-piston calipers for sale?

I will pay through paypal asap.

this is covered all the time. search for 5 lug swap. i believe you have to swap the hubs, rotors, and calipers

look for the 5 lug conversion in the For Sale Section.That basically gives you all the parts you need to go to 4 piston Up front...The singles can be converted to 4 piston calipers(swapped out) but you are going to need the Brackets as well,as they are Wider to accomodate the New Vented Rotors you are going to need to run the 4 pot calipers.The singles ran Solid Disc,I believe...the 4 piston Brakes are better as they Provide better Braking,period...the Calipers can be installed using Just the Flex line running to the Caliper.The "normal set-up for 4 pot calipers usually involves Different Flex lines,and a small Hard(steel) line that connects in between the two...Did I forget anything?

The rotors are identical for either single or four piston calipers...the only difference is 4 or 5 lugs.

Oh Really?..well how come they Make Solid and Vented rotors?..you need vented Rotors for the 4 piston calipers.

If I remember correctly, the fronts are all vented between 4 and 5 lug. 4 lug only has non-vented rear, 5 lugs have solid rears on S5 GTU, S4 GXL and vented on all turbos. I am not sure about S5 GXL.

4 Lug fronts are smaller rotors then the 5 lug fronts on S4's.

I think you can put the 4pots on the 4 lug setup, but I don't know what else needs to be done to run them so you should search for it.

No, if you put 4-piston brakes on your car... they need TurboII, GXL, or Convertible rotors. They have a larger pad that has more of a surface area for braking. These were never offered in 4-lug. So you have to swap everything at once. You can't mix and match between single, and 4-piston parts.

If you have a 4 lug car... swap the hubs for 5 lug hubs. Do the rotors, install calipers. For a 5 lug car you will need the rotors and calipers.

You can find more info on this in the FAQ section tho or do some searching for 4-piston brake swap.

You can use any rotor from any S5 car in the front as well. Even the S5 single piston cars.

can you not just redrill the rotor to 4-lug? or is it a matter of rotor spacing? or a different spindel? cause if people are switching the whole hub just because it's a difference of being 4 or 5 lug that's just stupid.

Any 5 lug FRONT rotor will work, they're all the same, there's 3 different rear rotors, 4 lug, 5 lug solid, and 5 lug vented, you need to use the correct ones.

You CAN miz and match with single and 4 piston stuff, to some extent. The lower model S5's have 5 lugs and single piston calipers, but it's different than the 4 lug brakes. You can use single piston brake lines on 4 piston calipers if you eliminate the hardline between the strut and caliper (makes it easier to change rotors as a bonus).

You can make a 4 piston 4 lug car by redrilling the 5 lug rotors and then making 3MM spacer to go between the rotor hat and hub.

but the thing is where did you get the spacer?Aaron if you can makes this pieces and offer them at a good price you can make a lot of us really happy plus you can make some extra money,did you ever thing about it?You can offer just the spacer or a complete kit with the rotors,help us out buddy

I had them laser cut locally.

I did, however, have a bunch cut since it was the same price for 8 as it was for two. They are 4MM steel which is a bit thick. It moves the rotor closer to the outside edge of the caliper then the inside edge. Functionally this is no different, but it looks odd when the wheels are removed and you are looking down into the caliper.

I could send you the CAD drawing so you can have them cut, or throw two spacers in the mail for the cost of shipping.

Offering a kit is something I considered, but there is too much liability associated.

It would be too hard to ensure they are absolutely flat. Even a little bit of runout will cause vibration. A mill would probably be the only acceptable method to machine down the spacers.

You should be able toy get away with cutting some out by hand from some 1/8" plate, which is 3.175mm. If you're careful it shouldn't be a problem, just be sure that they're not too lop sided, or there may be a slight imbalance and shaking, but they're so close to the center, it won't matter too too much.
