The turbo cars have the 4 ports, and the NA cars came with 6 ports. The 6 ports come on at about 3800 powered from exhaust pressure. a NA with only 4 ports would be terribly slow, so think of the extra two ports as the intake side of vtec, it is just letting more air into the engine.

for S5, the 6 ports come on due to air pump activation, rather than exhaust pressure.

If you're trying to identify, I'm pretty sure all N/A 13b's were 6 ports, other than the 13b-REWs and the GSL-SE engines. Look for 2 little cans sitting at a 45 degree angle on the lower intake manifold

Gsl-se engines are 6 port. The early rotary Mazdas had 4 port 13bs. All na rx7s 13bs have 6 ports.

I sit corrected. I was under the impression that only the GSL-SEs got 13b's at all. I am obviously wrong.

13b's are a pretty old design. Still golden though.

Gotcha - I just knew that the first gens started out 12a and then went to 13b later - since all the first gen guys salivate over the GSL-SE, I just figured that was when the change happened. 100% my bad.
