you have to have an idle to set the timing. you cant set timing if the car wont idle. it sounds like you have something else wrong,, have you checked your compression?

You *can* set the timing if the car won't idle, but it requires a reference RX-7 (properly timed) or a photo of said properly timed RX-7's crank angle sensor.

I don't have a photo handy - I may go snag one tomorrow. Most likely the timing is retarded a full tooth (sometimes the CAS goes in right, sometimes it jumps - I'm sure there's an art to getting it in right the first time, I don't know that art yet).

It'll start, run at higher RPM, have no power, won't idle, and backfire like a cannon if the timing is retarded by a full tooth.

Well the engine is good because I just put it in but never wanted to stay on. Some how I got it to idle it was real rough under 1k rpm that was the only time it did idle. At first i left the CAS stock but then later moved it but now I put it back.

Ah, you just put the engine in? What's the history of it?

A newly rebuilt motor will have lower compression, and may have issues idling initially. You can turn up the idle speed with the manual bypass screw to 1500 RPM or so until it will idle lower, if this is the case.

More likely, you've got a vacuum leak or two. Those will definitely prevent an idle.

Regarding timing, if you can get it to run below 1000 RPM, you can set the timing with a timing light.

Follow the instructions in the FSM for reinstalling the CAS. EFI chapter page 4A-52 (NA) or 4B-51 (Turbo). That'll set the timing right so you can idle the engine, and once it's running check it with a timing light.

NZ: I'v been looking at the book for the last few days and was wishing I wouldn't have to go that far. But I may have to.

Syonyk: The motor came from a pick-a-part, I got it from a buddy of mine. the motor is good and is somewhere in the lower part of 100,000 miles. I had a vacume leak but I pluged in all the lines, one wasn't in a few days ago. unless one of the lines has a leak itself.
As far as the screw on the top I tries that, I don't think it made a difference.

If it helps to know I don't have my air pump anymore, I also took out the auxiliary port valve

I had talked to this FC owner today and he told me that my engine is not geting the fuel to stay on that's why it doesn't idle. He told me to check my fuel pump and fuel injectors because they might bad or need to be cleaned out. Nothing about timing and idle. at this point I'm willing to try anything to figure out what's wrong.
