2nd Gen Newbie Questions
Hello friends at the RX-7 forum,
I am thinking about buying a 2nd gen RX-7. The following are some unanswered questions that I have. Are all 2nd gen RX-7's equipped with a rotary engine? Does the rotary engine use oil from the crank case to lube the seals or is there a separate oil reservoir for this purpose? Is there a particular 2nd gen year that should be avoided? How is the reliability and fuel economy of the engine? Is the automatic transmission reliable? Want to purchase a convertible. How is top fit and window seals for keeping out moisture and wind noise. Should turbo charge engines be avoided or is this a desirable feature? Are most all replacement parts readily available and reasonably priced? For example, what would one expect to pay for a rebuilt rotary engine?
Thanks,
Craig

Eat Rice Don't Drive it.

RX-7= Rotary Experimental 7
It uses four stroke oil with an MOP system stock
FC that should be avoided no
Reliability depends on maintenance and where it is a turbo or not
Economy is not synonimous with sports cars
automatic dunno but it makes the car slow
Don't know anything about convertibles yet.

as far as convertibles go, top fitment isnt the best, but its not horrible... i think the 88's had a problem with leaking targa sides, which they fixed in the 89-91 models with siderails on the targa section of the top
if you could i would get a manual one... my vert was the first manual car ive had... defiantely not goin back to the slushbox :-)
yes it uses oil from the crank case to lube the seals (about a liter every 1k miles... give or take some)
there were no turbo verts ever imported into the US... so if you want one you have to make it yourself (swap from a turbo car)
parts are available... and arent too expensive... a rebuild can cost you anywhere from a lil over a thousand to around 4 thousand depending on how much is new and if any mods are done to it when its being rebuilt
check the faq at the top of the the 2nd gen forum, and use the search feature in the upper right corner of the page
