2nd Gen HP rating.
2nd Gen HP rating.
currently i own an mx6 m-edition and a probe gt, but i'm looking to make the step up to an rx7.
i notice in the 2nd gen turbos, the first few years are rated at 182 HP, and the last are rated at 200 HP.
how much should that affect my decision on which year to buy?
other than the numbers, is it that big of a difference?

Well the later models, 89-91 have more power, but also weigh alittle bit more. My I ask what you plan on buying this car for, stock daily driver or track racer? I would say the later cars are better for everyday driving if you don't mind the automatic seatbelts, but the 87-88s are alittle lighter and easier to build safe power out of.
In case you haven't already noticed, the later ones look better inside and out too.

i'm looking for a daily driver, but i do plan on modding it.
i'm actually selling both the mx6 and probe for this thing. they're both 2nd gens, so i should have a few bucks to work w/.

I'd invest in a geo as a backup/spare car. lol You need a beater with a 7. You can't always fix the problems that arise the same day. You normally have to order parts from out of state/online.

I'd still pick an S4. I just don't agree with a lot of the 'mistakes' mazda made with the 89-91's. Not to mention S4's are much easier to find/repair/upgrade. Simply by numbers.
mouse belts are enough to **** me off. but lets see, electric MOP, heavier, plastic water pump neck, plastic swaybar links, etc. there are more but I can't think of them right now.

Buy an S4 and do an S5 tails swap. S5 tails are not all that great. They only look good at night, not during the day.
S5's have better interiors to me, but who cares. As long as you get a clean 7, interior is not really a bother. Just so the engine is strong, and runs well.
Good luck on your buy. And you should really buy a daily beater, cause you never know what can happen. I am in this situation right now.

I'd buy the earlier ones. The later ones are filled with crap and problems.

You better don your flame suit now.
All this thread started over something that was found in the FAQ for FC at the top of this section (if the thread originator read it like he or she should have before posting).
And the S5 interior is almost identical to the late S4, with the exception of minor differences like the radio surround and gauge surround, the much smaller gauges and of course the lame mouse belt system on USA coupes).
And of course I won;t get into the T bird tail lights on the S5
And for the uneducated person that suggested that the S5 PD was better than the S4, The S5 PD fails just as easy as the S4 PD (infact I personally have seen more S5 and S6 PDs fail than S4 ones). The only difference is that on the S4, you can replace the PD without having to replace the whole fuel rail... and the S4 PD has the neat little screw that tells you when the PD is about to fail (while the S5, just snaps a leaks).
