2nd gen. engine surging

From a cold start.
I have a 91 rx7 that starts fine. After the tach drops down from 3000 rpms, to around 1000, the engine surges between 1000 and 1500rpm. After it worms up even more it stops and idles constant 700rpm. Also after about 20 minutes of driving the check engine light comes on and at that point if I press on the gas about half way down it runs a little slugish. If I turn the car off and let it sit for 10,15 minutes it runs fine again for 10,15 minutes. The engine light comes back on again and accelerates slugishly.
Also what is the technique for getting the codes out of the ECU memory?
Thanks if any one can help.

sigh.. there is a green single connector beside the battery you ground it and turn the key to on but don't start it. and your engine light will flash morse code style. and give you numbers. Did you search? Try diagnostic error codes.

BTW Stop driving.. it sounds like maybe your OMP isn't working and your car is going into limp mode.
