Talking 2nd Gen Beater???

Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to this forum. I currently own a MKIV Supra and was thinking of getting a beater/drift car to mess around with. I was wondering what you guy's opionions were. I found an RX-7 86' 5sp NA, i don't know what it is (GXL, GTU, or SE)??? but they guy wants $960 for it. Do you think that could be a good deal? i'm really don't wanna spend much, just something for fun.
Oh and i did try a search but didn't find anything with these questions.
Last thing, if the guy doesn't know what the car is, what should i look for to figure out what it is. (moon roof)? Thanks again!

BJ

If it Runs, thats a great price. As far as what model it is, Does it have a rear Spoiler? If so its a GTU or GTUs (very rare) If it has a Vented hood its a Turbo II (highest HP FC) If it has none of the above its a GXL.

Put it this way, if i could find a deal like that on any FC i would jump all over it immediatly.

the spoiler means nothing. I have a base-model '91 and it has the GTU spoiler, it's not uncommon, a lot of non-GTU's were equipped with the GTU spoiler.

I'm curious as to what I have. I now have a turbo conversion, but my original '90 car had:
Power sunroof, power mirrors, adjustable suspention, rear window wiper, clarion sound system, rear spoiler, and leather everything.
If anyone knows, let me know.

Yeah, aside from the spoiler and the lack of auto-adjust suspension, mine looks like 100% GXL (leather, cd/cass., PW, PL, PSunroof, PM, etc...) but it's got the GTU spoiler and no badge of any sort (except the ones that say MAZDA and the one that says Mazda RX-7) but nothing on the side.

All GXLs and only GXLs had the auto adj. suspension.

You might call the local mazda dealer and ask them to run the VIN # for the appropriate model

Nothing in TriTurboGen3 RX-7 reply is correct. Pay no attention to his reply.

#1 Aznplayer911 said it was a 86. That means it can be a Base, a Luxury Coupe, a Sport or a GXL. Depending on month of production it could also be a 87 model year T2 (since some were built in 86 as 87 model years).

#2 In 86, and 87 the rear spoiler was standard on the Sport only, but an dealer installed option on any model. In addition much like the hood it is not uncommon to have someone switch on a later version spoiler or T2 hood in the 16+ years since the car was built.

#3 The GXL was the luxury nice model, with 4 piston brakes, LSD, often a sunroof, power windows, power mirrors, etc.

The price is not bad if the car is running and in decent shape. I would recommend you take the car to the dealer and have a compresssion check done, before buying, unless you want a project car to lean how to rebuild a motor.

Man, and here I was thinking that because I'm a newbie that I was confused about the models and it turns out that alot of people who already own the car are confused about which model it is. All of these differences in models and appearance really sucsk, because I am looking for a specific type of RX-7, but this model number has a spoiler, but so does this one, but that one doesn't

I am looking for a beat-up *** RX-7 in virtually ANY condition. They motor can be blown or not there at all. Same for the tranny. I'm looking for a project car (hence my user name) that has a good interior but more importantly, a body that has no dings, dents, or rust. Those are my only requirements... Now if I can just find out a way to identify the one I'm looking for...

You have a Twin Turbo Supra, and you want an N/A Rx-7 to mess around with?!!!

I'm sorry, but if I had that, I would LIVE in the car! No offense to the RX-7 addicts here. Don't get me wrong, I love my rex, but there is NO comparison.

Dude, learn about your car
In 1991, they only offered coupes, verts, and Turbo II's
You just got them w/ the options you wanted.
No GTU, no base, no GXL, no GTUs, no SE, just a coupe

And I think the bases where no name for 86-87, SE for 88, and GTU for 89-90. I might be wrong about the GTU

Every single series 5 coupe came with a GTU style spoiler.

Welcome, I think i speak for many of us in the forum when i say that i apriciate your interest in 2nd gen rx7, owning such an amazing car as a mkIV supra. Anyways if messing around is what your looking for then you gotto get a N/A. the na are the lightest models compared to the tII and from what youll hear from many ppl in this forum they are two totally diffrenet cars. I own an N/A and find it to be an incribly well handling car, and defetly easy to toss around. As for that deal with the 86 id defenetly go for it, just make sure its running and drive it to see what its like after all its just money right? well thats how i see it anyways

So, basically, i got REALLY lucky by having a little "GXL" sticker on mine, hence avoiding all this confusion?
