2 questions

i drove a really nice 87 gxl, one that i would really like to buy by the way. anyway, ive got two questions. 1, what is the rpm that the little beep goes off at, and is that a good shift point 2. well, i guess this is the third question, when i got up past 4000 it kinda slowed in acceleration.

The redline buzzer goes off at about 6500 RPM. Shifting there to redline will be good, no reason to rev any higher without any mods. As for the slow acceleration after 4000, could be the aux ports not opening.

Redline buzzer? Most of us ignore it

When you say, it stopped acceleration, do you mean it hesitated at that rpm, or had no more power after 4000?

The rpm buzzer goes off at around 7000rpms
most power is allready gone on an unmodified motor at that point.

And if it stopped accelerating above 4000, im assuming that the sleeves are stuck

What RPM you shift at depends on how you are driving. The auxillary ports are not opening up killing your high end. It's kinda like mazda's version of vtec I guess.

Is it a good shift point? Yeah if your racing another car...did you see your tachometer needle shoot up to the limit? Because this would indicate the limit of the engines rpm. And for the most part during normal driving your not supposed to redline your car, unless you plan to refill your gas tank everyday...

yeah, thats what i meant with, racing another car. sorry to confuse everyone. well, its not like it totally dies, it just feels like it kinda slows on acceleration. i was thinking maybe just a cold air intake could fix that problem. how do you check if the ports dont open?

When looking at your engine bay from the passenger side, look at the lower intake manifold. You will see a ACV valve in the center, with a hose going to the airpump. On either side of that ACV, there is a vacuum diphragm. Connected to these diaphragms is a rod that goes to a small lever on the manifold. You should be able to press down on the top of this rod, and that will open the ports. If you can press down on these fairly easily, then chances are your ports are opening. If not, they probably needed taken apart and cleaned.
