2 grand turned into 3 grand and one more week!!

so i put my car into the shop to get some work done to it..

profec spec ii
2 new rear tires
6 puck clutch with sprung hub
2nd gear syncro replaced
new altenator
new belts
and to fix a problem with the wastegate

total came out to be right around $2,200

Now i just get a call from my mechanic because its supposed to be done today and he says that the transmission mount is broke and transmission was sitting on the cross member, that i have 3 syncros that are shot, and pinion having to due with the driveshaft needs replacing! After figuring out what needs to be done, the total now is around $3,000 and ANOTHER week in the shop! This is pissing me off, I miss the 7....

so a 2nd gear synchro turned into 3 other burned up synchros?

sounds to me like you're getting the shaft, and it isn't the output shaft...

I spent 2 grand on my engine rebuild/restore/remove ac/ps and install 89 rack, depower/batt relocate/na all the way

and I noticed that my front cover had a crack and I needed two new rotor housings, new flyhweel, etc

now I have spent about $5000

and I have already spent about $3000 on suspension and exhaust. and I still haven't done a paintjob, I saw that $50 and it looks good for me.

I know how you feel man

well i knew that other syncros were a little shot, but only the 2nd gear would jam and grind, but when he confirmed that 1st, 2nd, and 5th were almost shot, i just decided to fix them all while the trans was apart. in the long run it will save me $$ since i won't have to pay for the labor of taking the trans apart again. anyways, one more week, then ill be running 11lbs of boost with a 6-puck...been waiting for that since day 1

your thorwing away your money. learn how to do it yourself and not pay someone to do it. thats why rx7 mechanics are hard to find because rx7guys do it themselves.

Be nice :P

If he's got the cash, and maybe isn't mechanically adept, why not?

I would love to do it myself, however it's hard when I have no place to actually do it. It hard enough finding parking around here, nevermind a place to take apart a tranny, install a clutch and replace syncros...

I third that. Mine's been in the shop for 2 weeks and they haven't even looked at the problem yet, feels like a month though.

Hope it doesn't get too much more expensive for you.

Doesn't really sound all that bad... seriously, If your gonna have the tranny rebuilt for one syncro... why not just get the whole thing done... Otherwise just find a used one and hope it doesn't grind or howl.

tranny mounts break all the time and if they aren't broken then they are probably oil soaked and need replacing anyhow

as far as the driveshaft... the u joints are weak and undersized and if they are worn ...the vibratoin can lead to a pinion bearing going out as well as an output shaft bushing

lets see

$375 profec
$150 to install
$250 2 tires
$450 clutch parts
$150 reman alternator
$30 belts
$45 belt/alt install
$250 wastegate fix
$500 syncro and R&R
----------
2155.00 (plus tax if applicable)

not too far off and thats just off the top of my head. Owning a shop is not cheap... it is much different then working out of your two car garage. You have a ton of overhead, so the guy is charging you list price for parts and probably 60-70 bucks an hour (on the low side) 80-90 on the high

best thing to do is do it yourself or make buddies with someone who can help. Start going to the club meets. Rotor heads are always willing to help as long as your not a leach

best of luck

one more thing... a solid rebuilt tranny from a reputable shop will run about 1200+ R&I... he probably has a guy who will rebuild it for about 500.00
