Smile 2+2 - seats + 2(Rockford Fosgate) + amp = ???

To clarify, I came up with this crazy idea a long time ago and now I'm actually thinking about going through with it as my summer project. I have a '88 2+2 and I want to take out the rear seats and build a custom box to fit right back there in it's place (if all goes well, I plan on keeping the carpet over the top, cutting a hole and adding some plexiglass to make it look way sweet). Anyway, I was wondering... Does anyone knew of anyone that has done this?
I see about a million threads about removing the storage bins and sticking in some subs, but I have yet to find one about the 2+2 configuration (and I just searched a bit for it, so hopefully I won't get the ol' "There's a million posts. Just search retard" bit).

The 2+2 is the same configeration as the 2 seater with/bins. The only difference is that there is either a panel bolted in there, or rear seats.

It still will suck sound wise

Get two 8" subwoofers and mount them in the rear shock towers.

Hm. So what you're saying is that it isn't the small, not so air tight enclosure that makes it sound crappy, but the position of the speakers? (I read one of your older posts from a while back, something about the bins being a shitty place to put the speakers). I figured the bins would be too small and not even air tight for a proper place to install subs. I figured a larger, air tight enclosure in the same place would produce a much better sound.

Make a search on it, or search my threads (click my user name ;o). I started one about subs in the bins and it was discussed there. It should help ya!

Good luck!

Bins have nothing to do with it. It is simply the location. You could build the most bitchen fiberglass, MDF, and acrylic enclosure there and it wouldn't make any difference.

I suppose with enough power, sufficent boost to specific freqency bands, and extrordinary speakers and enclosure construction, you may get something passible in that area, but for the most part it is a substandard location for placing woofers.

I am sure that there are others with speakers there that will claim that it can sound OK...But I suspect that their ears are not as critical as most people.

So in other words, if you have your heart set on it. Go ahead. Maybe it will sound good enough for you. But it won't be good enough to even think about showing and a waste of amplifier and speaker money (since two 10"s there with 400 watts won't sound as good as a single 8" with 150 watts in a proper location).

Alright... You convinced me... I was hoping it would work out but apparantly it isn't. I guess the good news is that I won't have to spend hour after hour trying to build something that is going to fit in there...

If you make an airtight box, the proper size for the speakers you intend to use; Yes, it will sound better than in the bins or shock towers. There's enough space in the bin area to make a nice ported box for two 10" speakers, and some 12" speakers. On the other hand, making speaker boxes that sound good isn't as easy as it looks. Since you're building an enclosure, instead of using the bin frame, you can get some good sub kick if you aim the speakers at the seatbacks, instead of up.

umm dude if you want the best sound from your subs dont aim them at the back of your rear seats, you should be tring to increase the max. path length for them, so this would be aiming them into the backmost corners of the boot area. this will also increase SPL and SQ.

Still Im no expert but Ive hit 143 db.

also what size Subs do you plan on running ?? if you so keen to remove the rear seats Id build it with twin 12's etc, then just put a perspex window in the back of the enclosure to show off the rear of the speakers and have the sub facing the rear of the cabin
