1991 Convertible with 89k miles... FAKE OR FACT
A friend bought a 91 rx-7 conv. AUTOMAGIC... it has the 15bbs wheels and the aero mirrors but the tailights are s4 taillights and the redline is 7k. Since is a 91 did it come with lighter rotors and the 160hp blah blah or is it the same s4 engine because is a convertible? Any real way to tell if no parts have been swapped changed etc...

It should have the standard S5 NA engine.Make sure all the VIN #'s match. I cant make any sense why anyone would downgrade the tails though... Is the trim painted to match the car too? My thinking about the 7000 rpm redline is that its because its an automatic. Surely they didnt put an s4 engine in there as a replacement... that would be so much harder, and dumb for obvious reasons. And with 89,000 miles the original engine could/should be fine. If it is a 91 it should have S5 tails and a 160hp S5 engine along with those bbs wheels and the aero mirrors.
Auto S5 cars had the same redline as the S5 turbo models. NA Manual S5 should have the 8k redline. Does it have an S5 cluster with the circular guages or are they kinda triangle shaped?
S5 Turbo 5 speed Cluster:
Note the 4 gauges to the left of the tach. They are circular.
S4 Cluster (NA I think, no boost guage):
See how the 4 guages to the left of the tach differ in shape?
Check the Vin # too.

You can tell by the throttle body.
I don't own a camera anymore but if the throttle body, engine bay, looks like this then it's a S5 engine.
All auto's shift at 7k, I manually shift mine at 7.5k daily.

All the autos had a 7k redlne. What does the trim look like s4 or s5? Dont know why they would put s4 tails in a s5 but hey maybe it was there taste. Pics of engine and car would help alot. Does it have a electric OMP? Does it have a radiator cap on the thermostat housing? Those are a few things that would make it a s4. S5's had electric OMP and no cap on housing.

I'm pretty sure all U.S. S5 'Verts had the airbag in response to the new U.S. passive restraint regulations. Coupes had the mouse belts which were cheaper for Mazda to manufacture.
Although the brochures in the FAQ don't confirm when the 'Vert first had an airbag, my 1990 FSM has details on how to maintain the system, so I'm at least certain they had them in '90...
