1990 tii high idle problem!! HELP!!!

Hello,

My name is Jared and im from charlotte NC. I have the chance to buy a 1990 rx7 turbo II in great shape for $500. I am told it had a good low mileage motor installed recently.

Problem:

The car idles at 2000rpm... will not come down.

Iv been reading and researching the problem and can only find info about low idleing problem fixes.. Maybe something with the "fuel enrichment mode"?

Please help me out with any info or ideas on this problem... If it is a costly problem then the car wont be worth it??

P.S. I purchased a ecu "chip" for the rx7 turbo I have the chance to buy, specs say it will modify the fuel and timing curve for more power, eliminates top speed governor and rev limiter... Would this be a bad idea to install into a turbo car like the one I have the chance to buy? I was going to get a air/ fuel gauge to monitor what the chip does in that respect. Not wanting to "lean" burn the engine I am somewhat afraid to add this mod if I do get the car.

Thanks in advance,
Jared

Intake leak, stuck dashpot, bad thermowax, idle adjust screw set to high, could be a number of things. And where did you get the ECU chip? Most of them aren't made for '89+ rx7's and putting it in would be a REAALL bad idea if it's not!

ok well im going to go get the car tomarrow... hopefully it all works out... i figure it has to be worth it at the cost of $500..

Umm the chip was purchased on ebay, one of those late night drunkin spending sprees on ebay.. it was $13.88.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2414006836

now i see its for a 88... yay looks like i bought a new a papr weight.

i found instructions on disableing the high idle at startup... woud this be a bad idea.. i figure its worth a try... I guess ill just have to take it to a shop and have it looked at.

What should i do first to make the car faster... with most cars there is small stuff like bolt ons to make a big difference.. where should I start.. im a real noobie when it comes to rx7's

usually "disabling the high idle" is for diagnostics/settings purposes not an actual fix. try to hunt down the root cause of the problem and replace what is needed. for a sweet car like that for that price there is no sense in not doing it right the first time.

damn good find man.

if its idleing high at first let it warm up porperly dont expect a rotary engine to be ready to go the second you start her up

also check vacume hoses

or even check your spark plug wires if thay are mixed up the car idles at around 2.5K to 3K i did it once when i first got my car.

Every post and every site i see...

Everywhere I look... every post and every site I see...
it makes me like these little cars more and more..

sounds like im getting a super deal for the price... the guys who own it have a car lot and also own a shop down the road... the car was taken to the car lot... and they didnt know what to do with a car with no pistons.. lol

so they gave it to the people at the shop and had a motor put in it... not sure what the origional problem was. They put a motor in it and got it runnin but the idle was not goin below 2000... so it sat for over a year and now I stumbled upon it.

Now that i know a little about them I feel id be a fool not to buy it for that price. Even if the problem turns out to moderately serious it is still a good deal!

Ill post pics and info about the car when get it.. which was going to be sat the 10th but lookin more like friday the 16th.

What kinda performance should I expect out of a car like this once running stock? and from there with mods?
turbo cars are a new thing for me.. so are rotaries.

The car iv got now is a 68 tbird built 429 500+hp stripped and insane.. hardly a daily driver. Id like to see the TII out run the beast one day, and from what I read it IS possible.. The beast runs a 12.5 in 1/4 due to insane traction problems...

With your help im gonna make it faster! ha!
