1990 auto NA loss of power...
Ok, so I have this friend, who owns a 1990 NA automatic... and earlier this week, it just lost all its power.. Before i explain anymore, I need to explain that recently the transmission has been giving her many problems such as stalling when coming to a stop, terrible catching of gears, shifting at the wrong times, etc. We found a leak in one of the lines and replaced it, but it didn't really fix anything. Shortly after replacing this line, my friend started experiencing this problem. So there was already a pretty serious problem to begin with even before the loss of power. With that being said, the loss of power is significant enough that it can't even get over 60mph on the freeway, and when i drove it, it had no pull whatsoever throughout the entire rpm range regardless of the speed of the car and gear it is in. The engine sound has become higher pitched as well. It's not throwing smoke out the exhaust like it would with a blown seal, and it seems to run the full rpm range smoothly without shuddering or anything like that. I'm not too accustomed to rotary troubleshooting so i did some research on here first for possible problems, but before i go trying stuff i wanted to get some opinions first. Although it seems pretty unlikely, could this immense loss of power somehow be related to the transmission problems? Thanks for your help, the car is her daily driver and we're trying to get it back to normal asap..

Well the car doesn't stall EVERY time, but it happens quite often... its the exact same thing that happened to one of my transmissions about a year ago before it just died.. And yeah, we were gonna swap in the 5speed tranny, but we wanted to fix that leak before we did it just in case that would fix it. Since i already plan on swapping the transmission, i was wondering if anybody could help me out with the loss of power problem, specifically... It's pretty severe... It's making volkswagon rabbits look like bugatti veyrons... I was thinking maybe the 5th and 6th valves arent opening, but im wondering if it would really cause this bad of a power loss. as i said, im not too experienced with rotary motors, so all the help i could get would be greatly appreciated..

Check engine light on? If not, it might be a clogged cat, bad timing, compression (cross your fingers), plugs, wires, etc.... I'm not thinking the lack of power is your transmission, though it could be...
You didn't mention slipping at all... Is the transmission slipping? if it is.. that could be a power problem... Or if its shifting too soon... but if neither of those are the case consistently, the transmission probably isn't causing the power loss.

Swap with a 5 speed. Take the auto trans and bury it in the desert, trust me. I did a swap on my '89 and it fixed alot of issues. By the way if you ever get a transmission service make sure you get a power flush or else your **** will be fucked. I had a similar problem. It turned out to be burnt clutch discs in the transmission.

the transmission doesnt seem to be slipping at all, and yeah, i'm pretty dead set on swapping in the manual tranny. I don't really think the loss in power has anything to do with the transmission either... honestly i've been busy with work and havent had time to really check over everything in the car yet, so come monday morning, i'll run through everything and i'll have a better idea of what could be wrong.. and im hoping its not the compression haha.. although i definitely cant rule that out at this point.
