1989 GTU exhaust

hi i drive a 1989 gtu and it is stock for stock for stock! ha so i wanna have some fun with it.. problem is, i dont really know what kind of catback or cat, etc.. that i need. im looking for affordable power. i figure a header and straight pipes might be my best best bet... but, again...not sure anyone got some reccomendations?

There's a start....

There's more like corksport, borla, apexi, greddy, etc...

Most of them are pretty loud though.

well first off if you can get rid of your cats all together, not sure what the smog laws in kansas are(if there are any?) but that and an intake would be best for some affordable power as rotaries gain more power from moderately increased airflow than piston engines.

Also I have 3" straight pipes to Racing Beat mufflers-- loud as hell, gotta nice little rumble at idle and everybody thinks i have cams -- but a noticeable difference from stock

He cant just get rid of his cats if he wants his aux ports to open still, unless he wants to do the airpump mod

it's an 89 so it uses the airpump to actuate the aux ports and his vdi.

As far as exhaust goes, it's hard to find a good balance between loud as hell and decent power gains. My setup is a pacesetter header and monza catback (picked it up for $100 from a guy in topeka) and had a shop weld in a thrush glasspack in the middle, it has a nice deep sound, decent poweband for a street car and I'm happy to know I didn't spend $500 on it.

People on here will tell you the the rotary exhaust will destroy a glasspack, mine has been on my 89 gtu for months and still has a great sound.

From what i have learned it depends on the quality of the glass pack, napa specials wont last long at all

I would be curious to hear what a glasspack sound like on a rotary. I can't imagine it sounds good at all...

The glasspack wont have any glass left in it but it will be acting as a resonator which interupts the straight pipe and keeps noise down.

well I'm an idiot i thought it said 88, yeah i have the airpump mod, but i didn't do it to the car, guy that owned it before me did all the exhaust work, not the greatest job but i can't afford to do anything to it now. I'm just basing my comparison on my buddies 89 gxl that i drove and there definitely is a noticeable difference

not something i would do, probably louder than running any piston engine with an open header, i attract attention on the highway at 3k rpm with the big *** racing beat mufflers... one benefit tho--

Thrush glasspack, cheap, but it's held up nicely.

It actually sounds like a hum rather than the boing boing of a piston engine, lol.
I like it, sounds smooth instead of the minibike sounds it made before the glasspack. It's pretty deep too, it triggers the car alarm on the civic at the entrance to my apartment complex every time I drive by.
The glasspack wont have any glass left in it but it will be acting as a resonator which interupts the straight pipe and keeps noise down.
If the glass is already gone, I haven't noticed a change in the tone, it still has a great sound. I'm uploading a video from my cell now, don't know if it will sound any good being recorded through that, but I'll upload it regardless. Please ignore the diesel that was backing in next to me.
