Does anything happen? Main fuse still good? Reversed cables? Grounded?

Does the car have the starter cut relay. It's located next to the main relay and has one plug with 4 wires to it. If it has this relay then run voltage from the battery to the Black/White wire to see if it cranks the starter or not (this is done w/the car in neutral of course).

At the top of the clutch pedal is a switch that detects when the clutch is depressed. I remember something in the Haynes manual saying that the car should not start without the clutch depressed, so if the switch has failed, that could be your issue.

My car starts even if the clutch is not depressed though, so it is possible that mine has failed in the opposite manner (the car always thinks the clutch is in). Either way, there is a check procedure for it in the Haynes Manual, and presumably the FSM.

Diagnosing a starter circuit is pretty simple.

check for battery voltage at starter, large wire.
check for 12v on solenoid wire while turning key to start.
check resistance from negative batt terminal to block.

if that is all OK then check voltage drop.
DMM set to dc volts
one probe on starter big wire, second probe on battery positive terminal (not the battery harness)
attempt to start, you should see less than 1vdc on your meter.

do the same with ground terminal to block.

or start at the starter and jump from the battery post on the starter to the solenoid connector. make sure the ebrake is on and the trans is in neutral.

I thought the same. Easiest, fastest, and most idiot proof test. Unless of course, the idiot leaves the car in gear
