1988 RX7 NA Engine problem

The engine was rebuilt recently and it seemed to be ok for about a month or 2. I then noticed emulsification in the oil filler tube. It did not appear that coolant was in the oil pan nor did I ever see the oil level raise. I also never noticed white smoke coming out the tail pipe. I would go through about a gallon of coolant in 160 miles. My water pump started leaking and the emulsification disappeared. I've been driving the car with a leaking water pump for about 3 months now. Does anyone know what the problem is? Whatever it is worth, all the pollution devices have been removed.

Thanks

At this point I'd rather not say who rebuilt the engine. I haven't fixed the water pump for 2 reason. 1. Haven't had time and 2. don't like seeing the emulsification in the oil filler tube.
